When I tried to operate the Server machine's Start function (Start/Control Panel etc) I found that I was in View Only mode, effectively.
I wanted to make a Win Firewall Setting but when I opened Control Panel, and asked for Set Up Windows Firewall, as soon as the DBoxes popped up I was unable to in any way control the Server. I had to phone the Server's user and ask them to shut down the DBoxes. AS soon as they had done that I was Ok to operate again.
ANy help on this is greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Nick

Re: View Only mode when using Start button
Was the firewall off and you turned it on? If so you would need to have created an exception for TCP port 5900 traffic or you would lock yourself out.

I am not sure that I uderstand. Everything works until I try to make changes that involve DBoxes.
I would need to try again to say "DBoxes in general" as dfistinct from "dboxes started from Control Panel" but if I opened a DBox from anything in Control Panel it would ignore the Client.
It almost fel more like UAC than FW. Unless you have no other ideas I will tru switching those off. Of course that means more Server operative interaction. Based upon my hgistory in that dept, I make no promises :(

Sorry. To address your question.
No. I made no attemptem or successful alterations to the Windows FW, and no others were installed.
Do you thimk it may be a UAC issue??
Sorry for asking rather than trying, but using the Server operator as a real "controller" of any sort is fraught with with delays, repetition and the possibility of real damage or worsening of the situation.

Re: View Only mode when using Start button
I missed that this was on Vista. I don't use Vista so perhaps one of the other members can chime in. I thought you were turning on the Windows Firewall which will block the TCP 5900 (VNC) traffic unless you've created an exception to allow this traffic.
