How to create a connection over the internet

Post by agross »

Nub question here i'm still new to VNC. I have installed the server and viewer on computer 1 and are now trying to remote view it. I have been able to view computer 1 from other computers in my house (I am using a versalink wireless router) but not over the internet. I have had multiple people try to connect to computer 1 but when I give them the IP and port number they always say that it returns a page not found error. I made sure that they included the http in the address but still no results what can I try?

One more question concerning your response is the YamaY a plugin for VNC or is it a standalone server and client. I was reading the site and can't really tell.

Another question, What is this Internet Information Server thing that I need when I try to install yamay. I have looked on microsofts web site and it seems to be something related to server 2003 and I'm using XP home currently, is there anyway around this otherwise I think i'll have to migrate to pcAnywhere.

You mention the viewer and then http which is a bit confusing. Are you trying to use the UltraVNC viewer or the Java viewer using a web browser?

Connecting from within your network does not require port forwarding, but connection from the internet does, so you need to port forward port 5900 and 5800 if using the Java viewer to the PC you're trying to access. PortForward is a great reference for instructions on setting up port forwarding on many different routers.

The other thing that comes to mind is possible confusion about public vs private IP addresses. To connect from inside you LAN you'd use your private IP address, the one that shows up when issuing an ipconfig command. To connect from outside your home network, you'd need to use your public IP address. You can see yours by visiting http://whatsmyip.org/.

I am trying to use the java viewer on a remote computer to view my own computer (over the internet not a LAN) running the Ultra VNC server. Also are you saying to connect to my server I need to use the public IP address:port number with port forwarding to connect remotely to my server?

Having just gone through connecdting via direct modem-modem, I posted a message about step-by-step for various setups. It seems to me that actually getting UVNC installed is easy: it's the rest that gets disjointed and confusing.

So please do write your process up. I figured that if at any stage to use a posted URL, you go to the authojr and ask if you can simply refer to it, rather than going i nto detail all over again.

These forums are really helpful;, but I reckon if there was some sort of repository of setup aricles, it would save a lot of traffic and possibly anguish. Just be prepared to have a few "questions: when you first post <G>
