Actiontec R1524SU, Netgear WGR614, and UltraVNC

Post by ben_b »

I'm wondering how I can get UltraVNC to work with these devices in use. Right now when I run UltraVNC it says my IP address is 192.168.1.2 which is my LAN IP address. How can I get it to work so that I can use UltraVNC from outside my LAN? The setup of my networks is as follows:

Qwest DSL Internet --> Actiontec R1524SU (*realworldipaddressremoved*, 192.168.0.1) --> Netgear WGR614 (192.168.0.2, 192.168.1.1) --> Windows PC (192.169.1.2), MAC (192.168.1.3), MSN TV 2 (wireless - 192.168.1.4), PlayStation 2 (192.168.1.5), Laptop (wireless - 192.168.1.6)

I have the exact same set up and want to do the exact same thing. I think our question might not be complicated enough for these EXPERTS to take the time to answer?

I wish you luck...

Short version:

You need to use your external IP address and configure your router to map the proper ports back to the computer runninf UltraVNC TCP 5500, 5800 andd 5900. I'm positive about 5900 but not about the others, as they are for functionality I don't use.

Additional information is in the forum and can be searched for. Specifics for your equipment setup can be found at the manufactures site or documentation.

Yes you can have remote access across to totally different networks. The UltraVNC RC18 is capable of getting to the inside of one particular computer in a LAN under ISP (A) to the inside of another computer in a LAN with ISP (B). I just did IT-- and am viewing the remote connection from my laptop to the VNC server installed on my desktop.

They both have different Internet Service Providers.

Here is the trick:

1. You do not need a Business account through your ISP which will enable you to recieve a Static IP address. I repeat NO Static IP address is needed. But I would give the computer running the VNC server on the LAN a static IP address.

2. You must enable Port Forwarding through the Router indicating the Service (winvnc) , Port Number/s (5900) and the VNC servers LAN IP address e.g. (192.168.0.2).

3. When opening the VNC viewer on ISP (A) you will see the connection dialogue box. Inside at the top you will see a drop-down box that aks for the location of the VNC Server. FINALLY you must enter the IP Address which your ISP provides for you Network. E.g. 202.168.110.235 follow by a colon (:) and the VNC port number 5900. CLICK CONNECT :)

202.168.110.235:5900

P.S.

I also have an Actiontec 1524 ADSL modem/router that I am going to be attempting to connect to my Netgear WGR614v3 router next.

This worked on my system with a NetGear Router, WinXP home, and a Ethernet cable going from the Desktop with the VNC server to the router and computer with cable modem running Win2000. I am now able to connect from anywhere with my laptop which has the viewer installed on any network / ISP.

My laptop with the VNC viewer that is now connecting is using a dialup connection with no router on its end, WinXP home.

If you do not have a Static IP Address then your Network IP address will change periodically e.g. 1 or 2 weeks.

Send a Reply if this has helped you, I am just curious as all this is new to me...
