VNC through VPN

Post by drewgraham »

I have some remote locations connected to a SBSR2 (Windows 2003) server through a VPN.

Because the remote locations don't have static IPs, or even the kit to reserve local IPs from the router, I need to connect to their installed UVNC servers through the VPN.

I can connect to the servers locally through the network, but not over the VPN through the repeater running on the server.

The error that the repeater log gives up is:

socket() initialized
bind() succeded to port 5901
listen() succeded
socket() initialized
bind() succeded to port 5500
listen() succeded
accept() connection
resolving host by name: stockton1
resolved: stockton1 (192.168.129.10)
connecting to 192.168.129.10:5900
connect() failed.
Unable to connect to destination host, errno=10060

Whilst the viewer stays on "Negociate Protocal Version"

My thought is that the server is listening on 5900 on the network interface, not the VPN interface, but that could be a layman's view.

you need on winvnc admin properties
allow loopback connection
UltraVNC 1.0.9.6.1 (built 20110518)
OS Win: xp home + vista business + 7 home
only experienced user, not developer

This may be possible, because once VPN connection is established, the virtual VPN adaptor will take over the TCP stack.

Can you do a test to prove this?
The procedure is as follow:
1. From a remote server, stop the winvnc on it.
2. Connect that pc to the Win2003 via the VPN.
3. After VPN connection established, start the winvnc server.
4. At your end, run viewer & connect to that pc.

See if this procedure work.
If still not success, please also mark down the record at repeater.

At step (3.), when the vnc server is running, move the mouse pointer over the icon on the system tray will show IP that vnc server being listened. Check what it is: the physical LAN card IP? VPN adaptor IP? or both?

I wasn't aware of the hover cursor trick, but I did that, it was connected to both adapters, and still got the same error as above from the repeater with no connection.

From the repeater log, the repeater can resove the IP from the host name when VPN established (192.168.129.10), and the hover cursor trick show the VNCserver was listening to the vpn adapter. If at this moment, you make a direct connection to the vncserver IP, can it be connected?
