Slow response when DOS window open on server?

Using UltraVNC 1.1.0.2 connecting to an XP SP2 host over a VPN. The user is running a DOS app in a DOS window on the server. Something has happened that has caused the response to degrade severely. For example, when typing it can take several seconds before the characters are echoed on th screen.

If we run Task Manager on the server and sort the process list descending on the CPU column the System Idle process is the biggest user of CPU time. However with the DOS window open and the DOS app running in the DOS window the VNC server is the biggest user of CPU time even when the user is not doing anything. If the DOS window is minimized the vnc server's CPU usage drops to normal immediately.

I am not sure if this behavior is part of the performance problem or not but would like to know if anyone else has seen the vnc server consume a lot of CPU cycles when a DOS window is open. So far I have not been able to reproduce this on one of my machines. Thanks for any suggestions.
