SC and Dynamic IP

Post by karl3300 »

I have SC with the following setting.

[HOST]
Start Online Session
-connect 192.168.1.103 wxyz.noip.com:5500 -noregistry

With this SC I can connection to the Viewer on another computer on the same network.

When this SC is on a computer not on the same network, I can't connect to the Viewer. When I click my SC.exe file nothing happens on either computer.

FWIW, I can ping wxyz.noip.com

but I can't ping

wxyz.noip.com:5500

even though my 2Wire router is set to port forward port 5500

Any ideas?

I used UVNC for several years when I had cable and a static IP and it worked well. Now I have DSL (AT&T) with a dynamic IP and I can't get it to work with the noIP static address.

Remove the 192.xxx.xxx.xxx and just leave

-connect wxyz.noip.com:5500 -noregistry

Thanks for the reply.

I tried

-connect wxyz.noip.com:5500 -noregistry

and the Viewer didn't respond

I then tried just

-connect wxyz.noip.com -noregistry

The server hung on this one for a few seconds and then an error popped up on the computer with the viewer on it. The message was

Connection failed - Error Reading Protocol Version

Possible Causes

- You have forgotten to select a DSMPlugin and the Server uses a DSMPlugin

- Viewer and Server are not compatible (they use different RFB protocols)

- Bad connection

I use the upper one at

http://www.uvnc.com/pchelpware/creator/index.html

It says

UltraVncSC based on RC23

I just saw that there was a lower one that shows

UltraVncSC based on REL1.00
This creator can also be used to generate SCIII. To use it for SCIII creation, you need to add the winvnc.exe (SCIII) in your zip file you upload.
Name need to be winvnc.exe

I didn't use this one.

My Viewer is

UltraVNC Win 32 Viewer 1.01 Release

The line in your helpdesk file should be

-connect wxyz.noip.com:5500 -noregistry so it know what port to use.

Make sure your viewer is listening on that port. Try to connect on your local LAN first. Make sure your viewer does not have the plugin checked.

I went back to

-connect xyx.noip.com:5500 -noregistry

and got the error message noted in a previous post.

My viewer computer is connected to a 2Wire Modem/Router which has port 5500 forwarded to 198.xxx.x.xx3 which is this viewer computer.

I really like UVNC for remote support.

I will pay $100.00 to anyone who can get this running for me.

Do I need to use the Repeater or do I need to get a static IP address or??

I have a desktop short cut with the following.

"C:\UVNC Viewer\vncviewer.exe" -listen

Try

C:\UVNC Viewer\vncviewer.exe" -listen 5500 -256

You need to establish the port and the 256 color will help on bandwidth.

I change the shortcut to

"C:\UVNC Viewer\vncviewer.exe" -listen 5500 -256

An got an error message and a popup screen.

The error message was "Failed to get server address!"

The popup heading was "VNC Viewer Status for -256"

VNC Server "-256"
Port "5900"

etc.

I need the Viewer to wait for until a server tries to connect to it. This worked for a couple of years when I had cable, static IP and a Linksys modem and routhe

Have you tried to set this up with your LAN ip's for testing. Some routers have trouble resolving public addreses while the connections are local.

Not "-256"! Correct syntax is: -256colors

Other than Ken's suggestion (test connection inside LAN), you may try if the following can help:
1. Reset the modem & router (not erase the setting, just switch off & on again)
2. Update your No-IP ddns
3. With the vncviewer running & listening 5500, click this link: https://www.grc.com/x/portprobe=5500
If the probe signal can reach your vncviewer, you will get the result "OPEN"
4. Try your SC.exe again, to see if it can connect the viewer.

Thanks YY

I started the Viewer (without the -256)

Then I did step number 3
(3. With the vncviewer running & listening 5500, click this link: https://www.grc.com/x/portprobe=5500 )

and got the same error message noted above re DSMPlugin, not compatible or bad connection.

GRC showed that port 5500 was open.

This response is not bad!

GRC showed port 5500 was open means your vncviewer can receive the connection signal from internet, thus implies the port forwarding setting at 2Wire router is correct.
The error returned by vncviewer is normal too, just becasue the GRC signal is not a real vnc connection and can't be recognised.

You should also verify if the No-IP host record resolve your IP correctly, use this procedure:
1. Open a CMD windows, and type: Ping wxyz.noip.com [Enter]
mark down the IP shown.
2. Click this link: http://www.cmyip.com
This site will show your current IP

The IP of result of 1. & 2. need to be the same. If this is OK too, try the SC.exe again to see what is going on.
