Can't connect with Java viewer

Post by Mike20878 »

I used to be able to connect to my home PC from work with no problem. But recently I have been unable to connect. I see my home computer name in the browser title bar but instead of a logon prompt I get an orange Java graphic. I updated my NIC drivers at home yesterday. I was having the problem with the "please wait" for the screen to load with the VNC client.

Thanks.

If you are using the free DynDNS.com service, go to https://www.dyndns.com/ and log in using your username and password on the machine that you're running the viewer on. Select My Services and then Dynamic DNS under Host Level Services. This will show the IP address your myhost.dyndns.org is routing to under IP in Database/DNS and the actual IP address you are currently assigned under New IP Address. If they aren't the same, you can update it by selecting Modify Host. I saw that they weren't the same once on my sister's machine. I don't know how often they update the free accounts. Hope that helps.

I use DirectUpdate to automatically check and update my registered IP. I don't think that's the issue as it appears I am connecting. I'm just not getting the logon prompt. When I use the client I get prompted for my password but then just get the "please wait" screen. I tried the solutions in the faq, though I haven't tried removing my wallpaper yet. I never had this problem before.

What happens when you use the UltraVNC viewer?

I already said what happens. I get the "please wait" screen. I don't recall the entire message, but it's in the FAQ. Besides, my work IT department made me remove it so I'm limited to the Java viewer.

Is there a way to test this locally when I'm on my home machine to try to determine what is happening?

Thanks.

Ok, this is odd. I tried connecting to another remote computer and then back to my own and I got the logon prompt. Apparently I can only not connect from my work computer?

They may have changed their IT policy. You can try switching to ports that they allow.

I'm just trying to help. I didn't understand that by "VNC client" you meant the UltraVNC viewer.

The viewer doesn't require installation. I use it on a flash drive. You only need the exe-file and the zip and unzip dll-files.

Which download is the standalone viewer? I only saw the full installation.

Hmm, so I can use any ports I want? Or does it have to fall into the 59xx/58xx scheme?

Thanks.

The link I provided is all you need for the viewer. That's what you were asking for wasn't it?

Yes, but you said:

I thought you meant I needed to unzip the dll files separately.

Oh, about the ports - can I use any port numbers not in the scheme of 59xx/58xx? I saw the faq that said to use double colons if I do so.

Thanks for all your help.

The link is to a zipped file which contains all the files I was referring to.

You can change the ports. When using the UltraVNC viewer you use the double colons. When using the JavaViewer it's only a single colon.

I tried 6100 and 6000, respectively and changed the port forwarding in my router, but when I try a local test I get a browser error that
This address uses a network port which is normally used for purposes other than Web browsing. Firefox has canceled the request for your protection.
I run Norton AntiVirus with worm protection, but I don't think I ever specifically set up exceptions for the standard ports so I'm not sure I have to do it now.

Thanks.

I'm not familiar with what the worm protection blocks and doesn't block. Maybe another user can help you on that one.

If your IT department is now blocking ports 5800 and/or 5900 why do you think they would allow 6000 and/or 6100? I was thinking more along the lines of some standard ports that are more likely to be allowed.

Well, it was really just a test here at home.

I got into the program rules and found the rules to allow ports 5800 & 5900 specifically.

I ran into our IT guy in the hall and asked about it and they are indeed blocking the VNC ports. I believe I read that I could use port 80 since I'm not running a web server at home? Do you have any suggestions for ports that may be valid?

Thanks.

This just gets odder... I downloaded the standalone viewer and connected to my dad's computer with no problem. So clearly they are not blocking the ports as they said they are.

So, something is wrong on my end as I still get the message "Please wait - initial screen loading..." when using the viewer. After a few seconds the connection closes. Any ideas?

Thanks.
