totally confused

Post by orionstoy »

I guess I misread what this program does. I wanted to make a file so I can connect to a clients computer for technical support. So far .. I cant see how to do that ... all this program does is make an exe so the client can connect to "MY' computer. I don't want that .. I want to connect to their computer.

Am I wrong and this program does not allow this ... will I have to make the client ( who is completely computer illiterate) download the full server / viewer and try to walk her through setting up the server so I can connect?

If I'm not wrong and it can be used to create a file I can send to them and they can click on it... while its running I can use the listen viewer to connect to their computer .. can someone explain how this is possible?

tried that .. does the same thing .. only connects to my computer and doesn't really work anyway .. it sits in the tray saying I'm visible ... but .. doesn't even connect to my ultravnc

tried using the compiled exe on my laptop .. again .. doesn't connect to my desktop .. just sits in the tray . .then exits

guess SC and this other program are not what I'm looking for ... I guess I need to set up the ultravnc server on the clients computer

I guess I'm not making myself clear ... I have a very ignorant client.. who keeps calling me on the phone and she cant seem to even get to web pages when I tell her to go to them ... I want to be able to connect to her computer so I can do the work instead of having to repeat myself 1000 times to try to get her to do the right thing.

I need to edit her registry ... and with her poor listening and instruction following ... I'm afraid to try to have her do it .. or she will totally fry her computer.

You configure the viewer like in the link I provided then create a "server" that you transfer to your client. You start the viewer then your client starts the server and clicks connect. That's it.

guess thats where I'm confused ... theres no such thing as a server and client .. it creates one file ... that file .. i have no idea what it does .. i launch it and it gives me a login ... i put in the password and .. nothing

I have no idea what I'm suppose to have .. or what the client is supposed to have ...

the way its described .. supposedly I should be able to send her this file .. she should be able to launch it .. and I should be able to open the listen viewer and put in her addy and connect

doesn't happen

just an update

here is what i get .. i get a window that says :
Start
Using Repeater
repeater01.ultravnc.info
ID: my id number
setting up encryption
Waiting for Viewer....
Encryption failed, if using proxy, new repeater listening to 443
The operation completed sucessfully
The operation completed sucessfully
Init Network failed

I honestly don't think the program works ... I guess I will just have to set up UltraVNC on her computer ... or use TightVNC because it seems to be better anyway .. this program doesnt allow you to stop connections without shutting down the server .. at least TightVNC has an option to block new connections

Plus all the help is written wrong .. it keeps saying to use port 5500 but UltraVNC uses 5900 so .. unless anyone catches it .. they will never get the program to work

Now I understand. That normally means that the server needs to be restarted, but I was just able to use it successfully. Can you recheck your viewer configuration. The repeater was restarted an hour or so ago so if you haven't tried it recently please retry.

Did you save the configuration prior to creating the server? You need to select the PHW-file from the list box and then click Start. The password will only be restored if it was less than 7 characters (bug). After you start the viewer on your desktop run the server on the laptop and click Connect.

well .. thanks for the help .. it obviously doesn't work .. yes i saved .. then made the server .. then put it on my laptop and ran it .. it says waiting for viewer ..
i launch the viewer on my desktop and try to connect to the laptop and it still says connection failed

I will just have to use TightVNC and try to get her to set up the server ... UltraVNC is nice but .. kinda horrible when it comes to actually viewing the remote computer... TightVNC works much better .. tho its missing a few features that Ultra has .. but .. hey .. use what works right?

I think a step is being missed. If you'd like, I could provide you a link to my server which will allow me to view your desktop and I could walk you through the setup on your desktop.

i appreciate it but .. if I'm having such a major problem setting this up ... theres no way this woman is going to be able to do it... like i said .. TightVNC has always worked fine .. it starts as a service but still allows me access to the settings and to see if anyone is connected (without having to run a 'helper') and also allows me to block incoming connections if I choose not to have every Joe Schmo who finds the port to try to hack me (a feature lacking in ultravnc)

I was looking for a simple solution .. something she could download from me .. run it .. and i could connect without her having to do anything but launch the program

I will just have to take a bit of time to set up a TightVNC server on her computer .. once set up .. I will have my solution .. she will only have to run the server and then I can connect to her ... its just getting though the initial setup thats going to be a pain with her.

I have already uninstalled ultravnc .. the program is poorly written .. or at least the transfer of data is poor .. when I did connect just using the server and viewer ... only half my icons showed up .. the screen kept changing colors ... it was not a very usable program ...

TightVNC has a much better 'screen view' than ultra :( and .. the single click is totally useless for my purposes. It makes things much more complicated instead of ... one click

So again thanks for all your time but I feel the program is not good and decided to get rid of UltraVNC and go back to TightVNC .. a much more reliable program
