Hey all,

Got my IP address from here http://www.ipaddressworld.com/
I inserted the IP address in the helpdesk file
I've created the exe using the online creator and ran it on a machine outside my LAN
Double-clicked on the support
It says it is listening...

Went home and ran the VNC server and tried to list clients but there is no clients to list
Ran the viewer but obviously needed an IP for that.

Unless I'm wrong, I wouldn't use the server IP right?
And left the port at 5500

Just exactly what am I to use at my end, the viewer-side to access the other machine.

Have you seen the [topic=4606]Step-by-Step Guide[/topic]? You'd need to set up port forwarding on your router.

It still remains, that some of us, READ ME, need a further hand because different names are used by different manufacturers, so it seems.

I use a dlink router which wasn't listed in the router info page and I am linking to an image of the router interface.

My questions are various and hopefully you will be able to assist me.

For testing within the LAN
1. Do I use the router IP or the computer IP in the helpdesk.txt (since there are 3 machines on the LAN)
2. Do I enter anything in the Name field of the Virtual Server
3. Do I enter 5500 in the Private Port or Public Port or Both
4. Stupid question perhaps, but I guess I should enable the VS now.

For testing OUTSIDE LAN OVER THE INTERNET
1. I use the DYNAMIC IP in the helpdesk.txt but I don't understand the DynDNS part
2. Do I enter anything in the Name field of the Virtual Server
3. Do I enter 5500 in the Private Port or Public Port or Both
4. Stupid question perhaps, but I guess I should enable the VS now.

PortForward is a great reference and I see your DLink router listed there.

1. Public IP address or sign up for a free account at DynDNS.com to get a hostname that will track your dynamic IP address.
2. Give it a meaningful name like SC.
3. Both
4. Enable

As an alternative, have you considered trying PcHelpWare? It is the newest version of single click and will replace SC in a 6-12 months so if you're just getting started it may be better to get PcHelpWare up and running instead. There is a [topic=9663]"Zero Configuration" PcHelpWare_viewer Setup[/topic] post to help get it set up quickly without having to modify anything in your router. Some users have mentioned that the repeater provides a slower connection than a direct connection, but it's a good place to start.

Thanks MattIce for all your references. I've looked at all of them.

The PCHware is interesting - I love the mom part - and might go there but I don't really want to something like this to beat me. I may be old but I'm not giving-up.

When I run the sc.exe it says it is "listening" but how do I access the remote/server machine on which it is running/listening - remembering I am trying to test it WITHIN my LAN.

You run the vncviewer in listening mode on the machine pointed to in your helpdesk.txt file. Then on the other computer you wish to access, you run the executable you've created.

Running this inside your LAN will test that you've properly allowed the TCP port 5500 traffic in any security software you're running on the machine running the viewer. It doesn't actually test the router port forwarding.

Listening mode, for those who don't know, and I have just found out, is activated from the Start> AllPrograms> Ultr@VNC> Viewer in ListenMode.
This wan't and isn't made clear.

Now, back to my many questions since I've not given-up just yet. I've been working on this all weekend and today and still haven't been able to get this thing going - Don't get me wrong Ultr@VNC Rules.

I have so far done the following:

- at DynDNS.org I've aquired an account and added a dynamic IP with the following http://subdomain.serveftp.org
- the IP address there, matches what I get using myip.dk (25.57.1.72) If I do a reverse check using subdomain.serveftp.org and it resolves correctly so, I know that side is work.

on the helpdesk.txt I have:

-connect 192.168.0.1 subdomain.serveftp.org:5500 -noregistry or should it be

-connect subdomain.serveftp.org:5500 -noregistry or should it be

When the client executes helpdesk.exe it open fine and goes into listen mode
***Why do I have to pieces in listening mode - the client side and the support side?????

Now for the router

As you can see the IP for the router is the default 192.168.0.1
BUT you have to remember that I have three machines behind the router and I want to use 192.168.0.102

PortForwarding has been enabled as instructed and


DDNS set up according to instructions and the subdomain I acquired from dyndns.


What am I doing wrong? There's gotta be SOMEONE here who knows what I'm doing wrong.

need to remove 192.168.0.1 if you are using the dynalais that url takes the place of the ip name..



so try removing the ip and placing your

-connect subdomain.serveftp.org:5500 -noregistry

Additionally, you need to port forward to 192.168.0.102 not to 192.168.0.1. Your hostname will get your client to the router, then you need the port forwarding to get it to the PC you're using for support.

No. The "subdomain" is different.

I figure if it doesn't resolve to my router something is wrong BIG TIME. Is it because I'm doing from within my LAN? Should that make a difference since I'm using the browser.

That absolutely did the trick and it WORKS. I bow to you ALL for your patience and suggestions.

One thing is ODD.
If this works then why if I try to connect using the browser from either outside or within my LAN it doesn't resolve????

If you typed http://subdomain.serveftp.org/ into your browser, then it would get to your router, but unless you've port forwarded traffic on port 80 to somewhere within your LAN the router just drops it so it won't resolve.

So, are you saying that if I enable the port 80 (see second last image above) and change it to 192.168.0.102 it should work?

Will it work from both inside and outside the router. Silly to say from inside the LAN I suppose but what if someone does not have access to another machine outside the LAN, how do they test these things.

I've heard of machines being exposed to the internet but, with a cable modem, how does one bypass the router?

Am I going off-topic here should I have started a different thread? :oops:

He is saying that if you use port forward 80 to your router local lan then it would probably show you the configuration.

Most routers however have an option to enable the wan interface for administration.. I would advise not opening the router admin to the internet.
