Autodiscover of hosts in client - is it possible?

Post by Net worker »

Hi!

I'm very new to UltraVNC. I have been testing a program called Remote-Anything to manage some remote hosts. It worked exactly like I needed it to, even when the host/server was behind a firewall. Unfortunately, their license fees are unbelievable high, so I had to "switch" to a free or cheaper option.

UltraVNC seems to work well when remotely administrating a computer. The problem is that I need the hosts to "tell" the client they if they are up or not.

I've tried almost any GUI/frontend announced in this forum. They mostly can keep a list (like an addressbook) of connections. But I would like hosts to tell, automatically when they are on, that they are "alive" and I would like this status reflected on the "addressbook".

Can this be possible with any of those frontends or with UltraVNC itself? The closest thing I've seen is the ability (I think in VNCScan Console) to scan a specified range to look for hosts. But this is not useful in my case, since the hosts I have to admin are not on an intranet but on the Internet (so go figure... I'd have to scan for the full Internet IP public range).

I see myself able to make a program wich would send its IP to my server's IP, thus discovering is "awake" status. Probably I could even add this function into UltraVNC itself to avoid having to install a separate program in every host, then "reading" what is sent by the frontend and, consequently, displaying its status. But I'd like to know if that's already done.

Thanks a lot for helping ;)

Check out [topic=3674]VNC Central[/topic]. It's a freeware application that sounds like it does what you're looking for. I have not used it myself so I don't know anything about it's setup or how well it works.

P.S. I removed your post from the other forum.
