Need help with pchelpware setup

Post by jmcklveen »

I have downloaded all the files & unzipped them. OK so far.
I have read the step by step instructions - not helping!
please - is there an overview somewhere?
I want to connect to a PC in England (Mum) who has a firewall and is behind a router with a dsl connection. I have a PC - also with a firewall installed - connected to a cable modem via a wireless router.
what is the IP address that the set -up instructions are talking about? Do I have to create a file for Mum to download? where from? do I email it to her? can I put a generic download file on my web site that my cousin can download too? if I move my laptop to my work, do I have to create another setup file because I am now connecting from behind another Ip address?
Are there some REALLY easy setup instructions? I know how to download & unzip files - the setup instructions past that point are just not doing it for me.
Can anyone help me please?

[mod=3406,1174434182] split of another topic to own thread.. [/mod]

ok pchelpware will work in that type of sernio

that is the Ip address of your internet connection you can see yours at http://www.whatsmyip.org/. You create a server using the viewer that you can send to whoever you wish to control their pc
do I email it to her? can I put a generic download file on my web site that my cousin can download too? if I move my laptop to my work, do I have to create another setup file because I am now connecting from behind another Ip address?
executables may blocked in email so your website would be better. well you would have to unless you setup or use a repeater for your connections

We can help you but we need to do this in small steps. The step by step is as basic set of instructions as we have at this time.

Using a public repeater like uvnc.com or repeater01.ultravnc.info would eliminate the need for creating a seperate server for each network you are in.

The first place to start is to setup a direct connection to see if you have the settings correct. Once you got that working then you can try to use the internet.

Port forwarding may need to be down because you are behind a router. You may need to forward port 5500 from your internet ip to your internal ip.

So lets take it in steps get the direct connection to work ..:)

I've tried to make this easy as possible. PcHelpWare is a very powerful tool, which is highly customizable. However, for those of you who just want to help mom and don't want to mess around with port forwarding or setting up a repeater I've created a Zero Configuration (or at least as close as I could get to zero configuration) setup of the PcHelpWare_viewer:

Image

Notes:
1) Password should be 7 characters or less
2) ID should be something unique to you. You will have trouble if someone else is trying to use the repeater01.ultravnc.info repeater with the same ID so don't use 1 or 1234 or 8363 that I show in this example.

a) Click Save. After saving, a PHW-file will show up in the list box called Repeater.phw.
b) Click Create Server. Select No to Does the user need to enter the ID?. Select No to Does the user need to enter the password?. This will create a PcHelpWare_server.exe in the PcHelpWare\myservers\Repeater directory. This is the file you need to get to those you wish to support. The best way to transfer the file is to host it for downloads. I don't have my own website so I've hosted mine using a free MediaMax account.

When mom calls because she's got a PC problem,
a) Open PcHelpWare_viewer, select Repeater.phw and click Start.
b) Mom needs to download your hosted PcHelpWare_server and run it. She'll then simply need to click Connect.

Notes:
1) Security software may notify you and your mom that your respective programs are trying access the internet. You need to allow the connection.
2) There seems to be some bugs associated with the repeater that require it to be occasionally restarted. In the event that there appears to be a problem with the repeater, please post to [topic=9600][/topic] so it can be restarted.

Hope this helps.
