viewer freezes with black screen

Post by mbrown »

Hi all:

Here is a weird situation. I have a Windows 2000 computer that has UltraVNC 1.0.2 Server running. When I try to connect to it using the viewer, I am prompted for the password, and after entering the correct password, I get the "please wait" text for a few seconds, then the viewer window goes all black and the viewer freezes and has to be killed. I am not using any plugin or MS login and I've tried it with and without the video driver running. To make this even stranger, when I use my SC package from this computer and connect to a listening viewer, the exact same viewer freeze occurs.

I have tried with and without the video driver, and I've uninstalled and reinstalled the server. It doesn't have anything to do with a firewall, because I've tried this both internally and externally. It isn't the viewer, because the viewer works on all other computers AND I've experienced this same issue having the server computer connect with three other computers running the viewer, both straight to the server and backwards with SC.

The only thing I can think of is the AOL Spyware Protection that we tried to uninstall, but even though the uninstall removed shortcuts and the listing in Add/Remove Programs, the computer still reports the AOL Spyware Protection running sometimes.

Anyone ever experience this strange issue? Please offer some advice if you can! Thanks.

I have had this problem but when I remove the VNC hook video from my display properties under device manager that seems to take care of the problem.

@gbinnovations: No, I didn't resolve this. I still suspect the AOL software. I'm not going to solve it, acutally, because we dropped that client and their pesky computer. Sorry I could not be more help.

@kaldag: I'm pretty sure I tried disabling the video hook driver without success.

I would suspect that aol was the cause of his problems. This problem of a black screen showing maybe due to the video packets not making it back to the viewer. Can be a real pain to figure out what is causing it. Trying to remove the video hook driver is a very good troubleshooting aide. I would also try a loopback connection as well to see if that will work. The third thing I would try is another pc to see if it does the exact same thing. If it works on aother pc then you narrowed the problem down to not being your viewer pc..
