Failed to connet to server !

Post by drewgraham »

Hi,

I've been a user of UVNC (and SC and PCHW) for quite a while now and recently rolled out 1.0.2.

I'm trying to connect from my laptop (Thinkpad R60) to two different sites - my home desktop and another site.

I can connect to both when I'm on-site in the local network but not over the internet - it produces the following error:

Failed to connet to server !

Which I know is a general 'no' error.

I have forwarded port 5800 on both remote routers to the relevant IP and they are running a no-ip auto-update service, but connecting direct to the intenret IP has no effect.

I have tried it whilst all firewalls are disabled - all machines are running Kaspersky Internet Security 6.

The 'another site' is behind temporary HDSPA router, so I can lay the blame there for now, but my home used to work absolutely fine.

The only other thing of note is that I have netmeeting running with remote dekstop sharing on my home desktop, but I can't see how that would affect it (they use different ports)

Does anything stand out to anybody?

well if you can connect when you are on the lan network with no issues then you should be setup properly and the firewalls on the pc

I would make sure that the noip service is working and that the port forwarding if functioning properly. Working in the lan proves that the pcs are setup so it has to be with the port forwarding or ip issue.

These may be of interest in checking if the ports are open and functioning properly. That is where I suspect your issue to be

I believe that you need to forward both TCP port 5800 and TCP port 5900 when using the JavaViewer. I took that from UltraSam's response in this post [topic=9570][/topic].

Good point mattice I took that as the user was using port 5800 instead of port 5900 but if the Java viewer is involved you maybe right

I was monumentally stupid.

192.168.3.1 != 192.168.1.3

:-]

Thanks for all your help; I've saved the debug pdf for future reference and PortQry is now part of my tools.

I've given my LAN machines meaningful names and typically connect using the machine name instead of the private IP address. This would help with your dyslexia  .
