PcHelpWare_server.exe won't run after upx unpacking

Post by Rudolf Bargholz »

Hi,

I have created a direct connection server and a client and tested these successfully on my own workstation. I then created a remote profile, changing the port number for the listener and using a different host ip address. The following connection properties were set:

Alias=Supporter2
Password=abc
Listen Port=5502
Auto Reconnect=true
Debug=true
Auto map=false

On being prompted the hostname I entered our external IP address.

I then created a server using the "Create Server" button. A server was created successfully and I was able to open the server on my local PC. I then copied the PcHelpWare_server.exe to separate remote PCs at two customer sites and tried to execute the PcHelpWare_server.exe . A dialog is displayed that the exe is being unpacked, by upx i suppose, but then nothing happens. The login window I see on my local PC when opening the PcHelpWare_server.exe is not shown on two different remote PCs. No processes are running in the background that I am aware of. It is as if the upx unpacked executables cannot be unpacked. Both destination PCs are running Windows 2003. I have seen this type of behavior before with upx, where on some PCs applications would work fine, on others the application would not open at all.

I have tried using the out of the box installer/zip, as well as tried to copy the newer DLLs available for download into all the directories where I could find the 1SCVDLL.dll and the 1SCDLL.dll .

Has anyone also seen this type of behavior?
Is there a resolution?
How does the Debug-mode work on the server?
Could an anti virus tool be preventing the execution of a upx unpacked executable?
Is it possible to create a PcHelpWare_server.exe without packing it with upx?

Regards

I've had someone report the same thing under XP SP2. Here's what he reports:
I downloaded the file, but when I run it, it just disappears. Doesn't appear to do anything...
Nothing special about my rig... just a plain WinXP Pro SP2 install...
I double-click it and nothing happens. I extract the files and click on the exe and it makes no difference. Don't know what else to tell you.
Is it possible that my user simply doesn't run with permissions to create the directory being referred to in [topic=9537][/topic]?
Would it be possible to unzip to %TEMP% and then remove the files when complete? Seems like you know the names of the files so you wouldn't need to delete them all.

you can update the upx to a new build or remove it from the step.
the exe file is bigger without upx
