uvnc.com returns silly IP-address

Post by klapperstorch »

Trying to use dynalias in PcHelpWare.
In PcHelpWare_Viewer I specify:
Direct Connection is ON
Alias: Anton
Password: anypassword
Listen Port: 5800
Use dynalias is ON and name is: Victor
Host Repeater: uvnc.com
Listen Port Dynalias: 5912

Pressing the Test button gives this result:
Repeater test
External ip: a lot of garbage characters, nothing readable
Local ip: 192.168.0.3

Why does it not show a meaningful external IP-address?

When I "Create Server" and then start the server program on another PC with a different connection to the Internet I don't get a connection to my viewer. I see the server connects to port 5912 of uvnc.com but then shows a message saying that the specified host (the viewer) is unknown.
The server is behind a firewall (but allowed to go abroad to ports 5912 and 5800 anywhere). The firewall is configured to log such attempts. However, it does not show that the server ever tries to connect to a port 5800 (the viewer port), only a connection is shown to port 5912 at uvnc.com.

I assume, that the garbage IP-address which I see in the viewer when pressing TEST, is also passed to the server upon its query to uvnc.com and that the connection fails because the garbage is treated as a host name.

N.B. I've got the same two PCs connected (server to viewer) when not using dynalias of uvnc.com but obtain the IP-address of the viewer from DynDNS.
This shows that my routers and firewalls are configured properly.

Any help appreciated.
Thanks, klapperstorch

Answering my own question:

After checking recent posts in the right forum I find that the uvnc.com service is unreliable.

Suggestion for all newbies who can't get it to work (and for oldies as well):
Use a dynamic DNS service like DynDNS.com. Many routers allow to configure automatic update of the dynamic DNS service when they go online.

For all other -not so happy- users it would be nice if PcHelpWare_viewer could be configured to use DynDNS and similar services in addition to supporting uvnc.com.

Thanks, klapperstorch
