For some reason I can no longer use VNC. I first noticed it when someone could not connect to my computer using Single Click. Then I tried using VNCViewer to connect to a network that I support. Nothing! The Connecting box just stays in the top left corner. I can connect to my wife's computer on the LAN with no problem. She can connect to my PC.
The only change to my PC that I can think of is that I installed Virtual Earth and some Microsoft Imaging software with it. I have now uninstalled both of those.
I have only been using the Windows XP Pro firewall. I have now turned it off. Nothing works. CanYouSeeMe can see ports 5400 and 5500 when I have run VNCViewer in listening mode. It can also see ports 5800 and 5900.
I am getting desperate. Does anyone have any ideas?
Thank you

You are joking, aren't you?

well I am just making sure that you did reboot.. I have seen the service get stuck and a simple reboot does the trick.
If that didnt do it then triple check to make sure nothing interfering. Firewalls. Other flavors of VNC installed on the computer. Try a loopback test to see if your winvnc server is working.

Yes, loopback works. I have now discovered that I can make it work by uninstalling and reinstalling the USB modem. Everything works for about a day. Then it stops. If I uninstall and reinstall then it works again. This happens with two different modems. It is as if some piece of software is stopping my modem receiving data. It's weird.

Let me just emphasize that I have no problem surfing the internet and emailing. It is only with UltraVNC.
I only have UltraVNC 1.0.1 installed.

oh so is this a dsl usb modem or a dial up modem??
I have seen dsl usb modems do really funky things it is always better to have them on a pure ethernet connection.
Check your usb controllers and see if they have a power management setting maybe your modem is going half asleep and not waking up properly I have seen that happen before.
Then when it stops functioning see if you can find anything else that is not working. It may give you a clue into why it is stop repsonding.
Do you see anything in your event viewer??
Also there is a non issue where version 1.02 for some odd reason will quit working the developers know about it and are working on it but this does not seem to fit your pattern

Re: Cannot VNC to anything outside of my LAN. HELP!!!
I have had a look in the Event Viewer in the System folder. I don't really know what I am looking for so I have copied a selection of the error messages that I found, in the hope that you might cast some further light on things. The first one looks suspicious to me.
Event ID 7000
The General Purpose USB Driver (adildr.sys) service failed to start due to the following error:
The system cannot find the file specified.
Event ID 4226
TCP/IP has reached the security limit imposed on the number of concurrent TCP connect attempts.
Event ID 1517
Windows saved user PCNAME\USERNAME registry while an application or service was still using the registry during log off. The memory used by the user's registry has not been freed. The registry will be unloaded when it is no longer in use.
This is often caused by services running as a user account, try configuring the services to run in either the LocalService or NetworkService account.
Event ID 1002
Hanging application rundll32.exe, version 5.1.2600.2180, hang module hungapp, version 0.0.0.0, hang address 0x00000000.
