VNC 4.0
VNC 4.0
Hi,
On my server computer I was using VNC 4.0 then i installed UltraVNC. When i uninstalled VNC 4 I couldn't log in again until i reinstalled it. Can i use ultravnc by itself or do i have to have vnc install along with it? When i try to do a file transfer, I get "The connected VNC Server doesn't support File Transfer! What can I do to transfer files?
Thanks.
Craig

Well. You don't need to install the viewer on the server machine.
If you don't run the WinVNC.exe server on the viewer machine, no matter if the viewer is installed or not on the server machine, it won't be able to connect to the viewer machine.
To be more clear:
1. "Server" Machine : the one you want to take controle of
- Install UltraVNC (server only is enought)
- Run WinVNC.exe server, set up the VNC password if needed
2. "Viewer" machine : the one you want to controle from
- Install UltraVNC (viewer only is enought)
- Run vncviewer then enter the "Server" machine IP or network name, then "Connect" and enter the VNC password.

to be more precise:
- the server always *knows* about the viewer connected to itself (i.e. it has a list of IPs which show who is connected to it)
- the viewer is the only one that views anything remotely (i.e. can see and control the remote pc if this has a running vnc server).
- the connection is possible in mixed modes (i.e. you can connect from ultravnc viewer to realvnc (or tightvnc or other vnc) server. But the advanced features are only available on a coupled pair (i.e. ultravnc viewer->ultravnc server)

Hi everyone and thanks to everyone for helping me out this. I got the ultras talking to each other and file transfer works great which was my main objective. With that said, buddy on the server is seeing my mouse movements and confuses him a bit. Is there anyway, I the viewer, can stop that from happening? Finally, viewer in listen mode. What's the purpose of this program? Am I right in thinking if I have listen mode running when the server comes online will it let me know? Thanks everyone, i'm very new to this and you guys have helped tremendously in understand the concepts.

Ultravnc disconnects
Ok we got just about everything working now but when the server logs offs, the client gets disconnected. With WinVNC 4 we didn't have this problem. Is there a way for UltranVNC to stay connected when the server is logged off? Thanks again for your help.

UltraVNC
VNC Server Version 4 is running in services and is started but is this the RealVNC or the UltraVNC. I had to reinstall RealVNC so we could keep the connection while logged off. UltraVNC is the one I would like because it has the file transfer included with it.
Thank you NightRyder.

Alright, I would say you should get rid of RealVNC / VNC 4 all together. Uninstall UltraVNC too, and anything else related; an old hook driver maybe. Then reboot the server and install UltraVNC RC18; making sure you pick the option in the setup to run as a service. Make sure to enter a password when it pops up the configuration box after installing. Then get the Test19_11 from http://download.ultravnc.net. Copy the new fiiles over both the remote and the server computer's winvnc.exe and vncviewer.exe. I would install the newer hook driver too. (http://users.skynet.be/cantincrode/rudi ... VER_18.zip) Run the install.bat that comes with that. Reboot the server once your all done installing new things. Now try the logon/off. I know it works, because I logon/off with only UltraVnc. I've heard that when you have multiple types of vnc, it can get lots of things screwed up. See what that does for you, good luck.
using latest code.... always... except when im not.
