VNCViewer Listen Mode and WinXp SP2

I am trying to view a friend's computer by having him initiate a connection to my vncviewer in listen mode...This worked fine before until I installed SP2 on WinXP Pro...I have the XP firewall turned off and the right port forwarding is enabled...If I change the port to forward to a not SP2 machine it works fine but otherwise he gets and error that can't connect to listening vncviewer.

Like I said all port forwarding is fine because when I forward them to an ip of a non SP2 machine the connection works. I have tried 2 different SP2 machines running VNCViewer in listen mode and still no go.

Did you open firewall for 5500 and 5900 on SP2

The SP firewall only detect outgoing connections, incoming
connections have to be manual added...
Try first with disabling the firewall

The firewall is disabled...could WinXP still filter even when the firewall is turned off...I have uninstalled VNC and reinstalled it still no go...I have a hardware firewall so I don't turn on the XP firewall and the forwarding works because I can connect to a non SP2 machine on ports 5500 and 5900 if I change the forwarding to the ip of that machine. I think it's a bug.

I too am having problems connecting to an XPsp2 machine

The problem I found it to be was that with UltraVNC installed as a service.
While using a registry monitor (sysinternals.com regmon)
When I attempt to connect, I see UtraVNC trying to read settings from hkLM. and resulting in NotFound errors
there were no settings for UltraVNC under hkLM, only hkCU.

After realizing this, I exported UltraVNC's settings from hkCU, changed most all entries to import to hkLM.
then I imported that file to the Reg

I can now connect to this system, even when no local account is logged in.
But, I get a BLACK screen.
It does recieve input, though, becuase I was able to blindly login. and then blindly logout.

Sumation:
Make sure there are settings loaded to hkLM
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ORL]
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\ORL]

I have my system working now

I had previously installed UltraVNC to a Win2k system successfully. System works greate.
This is what I did for the WinXPsp2 system.
I exported [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ORL] from the Win2k system.
I Then Imported that reg file to the WinXPsp2 system.
I also then changed the port.

The WinXPsp2 System is working just fine now

I had the same problems with SP@.

I manually configured the Win firewall to allow incoming connections on 5500 and 5900. Solved the problem.

To overcome the XP SP2 Firewall issue we can open the ports
by vnc.

The strange thing is, it works perfect,but you don't get any
Firewall warning when you alter the ports.

I'm just wondering what's the use off a Firewall when an application can alter your Firewall settings without any notice.

Is it "net ettic" correct, to let vnc alter the port setting ?

I just installed SP2 last night I forgot about the whole firewall issue and now I am at work and I need to get into my UltraVNC. Is there anyway to do this from this end? Like send a ddos to my machine and kill the firewall or something? I don't know... I would think there would be someway. If anybody knows, please tell me.

Well enough there is no (known) way to do this ! You'll have to wait until someone can physically access your PC to open the port on the FW.
