DSM Plugin

Post by USMC_Stitch »

Running the viewer in -listen 5500 mode. I've packaged the files without the cipher/encryption file. Only used the bmp's, icons, & helpdesk.txt. I have 4 people in my office and i put the viewer (UltraVNC-102-Setup.exe) on all pc's. Everyone in the office works except me. I get the

Connection failed - invalid protocol!
possible causes
- you've forgotten to select a dsmplugin and the server uses a dsmplugin
-Viewer and server are not compatible (they use different RFB protocoles

Now we have multiple sites around the state as well as the internal/local lan. To connect we use the MPLS Cloud for remote. My Local Lan (same building) can connect to me using the *.exe we posted on the intranet, as well as connect to all my coworkers. I can Remote Desktop to a server in another part of the state and the go to the local intranet and run the *.exe to connect to my machine and it works fine. BUT when a client in another city goes to the intranet and runs it, i get the above error. They are able to connect to my co workers fine. We (my coworkers and i) all are running the same listener configured the same way. I did them withing 5 minutes of each other. I ran them from the same executable off my key drive.

On a side note, when my coworker tried to push UltraServer via a help desk software which called back to him so he can start a remote session, he got the same error.

I am at my wits end here, i've been working on this for 2 days now and i can't see the end. What am i doing wrong??? do i have a service enabled/disabled? What Window's service could be blocking it. I dont' have a Software Firewall on here.

How did you create the Single Click.exe??

Did you include the msrc4.dsm in your custom zip??

If using a key did you include it??

Does your helpdesk.txt file include the switches -plugin -connect{ip or url}:5500 -noreg??

No, I didn't include the msrc4.dsm in my sc.exe file. I wanted to get everything working b4 i went w/ encryption. And everything is working EXCEPT MY station. Here is my helpdesk.txt (prop. info edited out for security/policy):

[HOST]
User1
-connect Computername.domain.com:5500 -noregistry

[HOST]
User2
-connect Computername.domain.com:5500 -noregistry

[HOST]
User3
-connect Computername.domain.com:5500 -noregistry

[HOST]
User4
-connect Computername.domain.com:5500 -noregistry

This has to be a local problem. I did have SqlSvr running as well as IIS and MSVM at one point, but i uninstalled them thinking that they were causing a problem. I've also repaired my TCP/IP Stack using WinsockXPFix.exe. Could one of those programs/servers running on my maching could have buggerd up my registry or left some trace of themselves that would interfere w/ UVNCSC? That is really the only differrence between my coworker's machine and mine: The services that are disabled and the Servers that i ran on mine.

No. As an added bonus, i took my pc home this weekend and formated the HDD and reinstalled Windows XP Pro. Put nothing on it but windows updates, firefox, Adobe reader 7.0.8, AdAware, Spybot, winrar, QUicktime and nero. Took it back to office and installed the UltraVNC-102-Setup.exe, performed a viewer installation. Same issue. I didn't tweak anything. Also, Windows Firewall had prevented my coworker from pinging me. As soon as i disabled the FW, pinged fine. WTH??

Here's another thing....

OK. we fixed it. don't know how or why but it now works. After tons of comparing and scrounging and troubleshooting it was this simple:
- My name was at the bottom of the list
- we added another fake user and named it *space, space space* Effectivaly giving no name.
- That put my name 2nd to the bottom of the list, but the last one VISIBLE.
- Voila! that worked.

Not important, but WHY??

How many Hosts did you have in your helpdesk.txt??

Most of the time there are only 3 main reasons for dsm failure:

1.) The *.key and the *.dsm are named wrong or not correct!!
rc4.key and MSRC4Plugin

2.) The viewer isnt listening to the correct port or the syntax in the helpdesk.txt is wrong

Example of the command lines (without repeater)

-plugin -connect X.X.X.X:5500 -noregistry {helpdesk.text}

the viewer in plain listen mode c:\program files\UltraVNC\vncviewer -listen -dsmplugin MSRC4.dsm {viewer listeing on port 5500 with dsm}

3.) It will not work without in encrytion either and you are fighting a port/ip/firewall issue

Alot of users seem to have difficulty with the Single Click configuration and setup. There are many stickes in the SC subforum that are very helpful but the problems I think is that everyone configures it a different way thus causing more confusion..

alright, thanks guys for the assist. I'll look into all that stuff. Espically since we're gonna want to encrypt our comms. In the meantime, i'm just happier'n a puppy with two peters to be able to connect at all. 3 Cheers.
