works on lan; no workee on internet

my router ip: 10.1.1.1
my machine ip: 10.1.1.12 (the machine giving support, running viewer)
other machine: 10.1.1.7 (the machine needing support)

helpdesk.txt relevant details:

OK, so I finally got helpdesk.txt configured right after the maaaaaze of confusion that I normally associate with open source projects. Nothing new, I say to myself. Anyhow, I love it. It works- on the LAN.

However, my main objective was to get it working over the net.
Who on earth runs this over lan? Not me.

Anyway, I try to put my no-ip domain in there; here's a fictitious example I humorously prepared earlier:
random.noip.domain:5500

Obviously I put the real details there, but....
it never works!

Relevant ports have been forwarded fine. The No-IP software client is installed & running on my machine. Does the fact that both machines are behind the router mean I can't test it - but it's working - or does this mean I shold be able to test it this way but it's just not working?

Do I need to give the file to someone on the wider net for me to test whether the file works or not (ie. on the public side of the router?)

Appreciate any help, coz I'm pulling my hair out here.

Open VNC Viewer in listen mode and then go to this site
http://www.canyouseeme.org/

and test port 5500

If no susccess check firewalls and check if your router is portforwading 5500 to you local lan IP (the computer running vncviewer -listen)

Your ISP is not blocking port 5500
-----------------


However,
I do get a pop-up saying:

Connection failed - Error reading Protocol Version

Possible causes:

- You've forgotten to select a DSMPlugin and the Server uses a DSMPlugin
- Viewer and Server are not compatible (they use differeent RFB protocoles)
- Bad connection

Any ideas?

Thanks for your help Dwalf, but after trying it, I give up. Nothing works. I'll come back to this in 6 months and see if things have improved.

i had exactly the same problem until i found this thread:

Ignore the bit at the beginning, its the tip near the end that tells all you need to know.

Basically you cant test the setup using your own lan, it seems as if your router intercepts the outgoing and reroutes it internally which then does not work.

From my own experiment, the server part of the setup is sending packets correctly, but the viewer is never receiving them.

Find someone on the internet external to your lan to try the file. It worked first time for me and both server and viewer are behind NAT.
