Hello,
I am trying to connect to a remote server and everything was working fine for weeks until today and I get the error "Connection failed - Error reading Protocol Version".
If I reboot the server, I can connect again. How can I fix this problem.
Thanks,
Kent

Re: Connection failed - Error reading Protocol Version
I encounter the same problem since today. The VNC server worked excellent for 9 months until now. After a reboot it works again but not for long. I don't use MS logon or DSM. The server is installed on windows 2003 server. I use version 1.0.1 Is it a good idea to install the newer version to solve my problem?
Re: Connection failed - Error reading Protocol Version
I have the same problem. Upgrade to 1.0.2 did not solve the problem. UltraVNC is almost useless that way.
Re: Connection failed - Error reading Protocol Version
I am wondering if windows updates isnt causing this problem?? I had two pcs this week with stop errors from windows update..
Try to restore it back before you experianced problems.. Let us know what the results are

Re: Connection failed - Error reading Protocol Version
I have (almost, get some other errormessages sometimes) the same problem on 2 boxes since like 10 days. One of them is a Server 2003, which is more or less production and therefore I don't want to remove any updates from M$. The other one is a XP Pro box, but that one is on a remote site and with no working VNC I can't try to downgrade tha OS right now. The strange thing is that I have another server 2003 that has exactly the same config and H/W as the one with the problems and that one works fine? I have tried to upgrade to 1.0.2 on all the machines with no difference. I also suspect that it's a M$ update that has f*ed up something...
I can connect to the XP box once after a reboot, but a while later when I want to reconnect to it I either get "Connection refused" or it tries for like forever (up to a couple of hours) and then eventually I get the login prompt which only dies after typing the password...?

Re: Connection failed - Error reading Protocol Version
I don't think the server (windows 2003 server edition) did any windows updates. I only did an upgrade of CubicPro, an accounting program. I hope this is not the problem because my customer needs it. VNC is configgured on the standard ports 5800 and 5900.
I also installed the same vnc server 1.0.1 on a windows xp desktop on ports 5800 and 5900. On this pc vnc works very well.
I suppose I can configure both vnc servers on the same ports?? I use vpn so I can use local ip's.
The strange thing. The one day it works fine on the 2003 server, the other day I always get the error:
Connection failed - Error reading Protocol Version
Possible causes:
- You've forgotten to select a DSMPlugin and the server uses a DSMPlugin
- Viewer and Server are not compatible ...
- Bad connections
I don't use a DSMPlugin
Viewer and Server are realy the same version
Bad connections ... it works fine on the XP machine so ...

Please see here:

A patch will be released as soon as possible if the problem is confirmed.
Until then, you can use a DSMPlugin on your servers or use another port (instead of 5900)
