Can Someone Help Me With My Connection?

Post by zikot »

I am trying to connect to my home PC using UltraVNC and I am unable to connect. When I am at home I can connect to my PC using it's LAN IP address,192.168.200.2, with my Dell Latitude notebook PC with a wireless card. I also tried to connect to the PC's internet IP address, via Sprint, with no success, eventhough I can see the connection trying to be made by watching the network connection display, two monitors, light up when it tries to connect. I have triend using my Dell Latitude from other wireless locations around town, Library, and I am still unable to connect. I have tried both of the above attempts with my WinXp firewall off and I still couldn't connect. Here is what I have done to try and the connection established:

1. Went into WinXP firewall and allowed access to TCP and UDP port 5900
2. Tried turning the WinXP firewall off.
3. Went into WinXp firewall and allowed access to TCP and UDP ports 5500 and 5901 to allow access to the UltraVNC repeater mode.

One final note: I am able to ping my home PC dynamic IP address that is provided by Sprint, but still unable to connect to the PC using that IP with my Dell Latitude notebook using that IP address while at home or at remote locations.

Can anyone tell me what I am overlooking, doing wrong, or what I need to do so I can connect to my home PC with my Dell Latitude wireless PC using UltraVNC. My goal with this is to be able to remote to my PC when my family and I go to Hawaii next year for security purposes and to chat with our home sitter.

bridge your LAN-WLAN into your broadband router ADSL/CATV
then port forwarding is available for your WLAN
UltraVNC 1.0.9.6.1 (built 20110518)
OS Win: xp home + vista business + 7 home
only experienced user, not developer

I don't have a broadband router. I only have a Belkin 802.11b wireless router and a Sprint DSL. The Sprint DLS connects to the LAN RJ45 connector on the back of the wireless router and the the PC is connected to port#1 on the router. I contacted Sprint and they walked me through bridging the router but I am still unable to remote to the PC. Do I need to connect the PC directly to the Sprint DSL and not via the wireless router?

Youe Belkin 802.11b wireless router IS a broadband router. In general, people say "broadband router" whenever the Internet sevice is "always on" and the service is "shared" between multuple computers or converted to WiFi (802.11 a, b, g or n.)

You will need to configure port-forwarding on your Belkin unit so that any Internet VNC requests can be sent to your PC.

Example:

Internet IP: 123.123.123.132
Port: 5900

forward all request to:

LAN wireless IP: 192.168.200.2
Port: 5900

Your Belkin unit's manual should help you with this.

Thank you to everyone for your help.

I went to the manual that came with my wireless router and assigned one of my internal IP addresses to port 5900 and it is working perfectly now. In the process I have learned something new about "Port Forwarding" and "Tunneling".
