Need help with Netgear WGR614 Router and SC setup.

Post by suniltantry »

Hi I am using a Netgear router and want to use Sc to connect between my machine that is on the direct internet with Netgear router and to my clients machine which is also connected to a direct internet connection from their ISP. I read through most of the topics on the fourm but i am unable to configure my machines and connections.

Setup on my end:-
------------------------
2 machines, 1 netgear adsl wireless router. both the machines are connected hard wired to the router and bot of them are getting IP address from DHCP server running on the router. My IP address are 192.168.1.2 and 192.168.1.3. I also registered for dydns service. I have also configured my router to do port forwarding.

I have made the helpdesk.txt file in such a way that all my connections are comming in on port 443. the router has also been configured to allow port 443.

Please help me in giving detailed steps on how to configure the router and how to configure the sc helpdesk.txt file .
---Thanks & Regards,
Sunil.

well I mostly just use ports like 5901 etc.. If you are forwarding port 443 then you may have issues with skype etc.

I would suggust that you reserve the ips in your netgear router so that you can port forward to the same ips.

helpdesk.txt

Encypted
[HOST]
Connection 1
-id 1234 -plugin -connect your.dyndns.org{or wan IP}:443 -noregistry

Connection 2
-id 1234 -connect your.dyndns.org{or wan IP}:443 -noregistry

so as i understand what u r telling me is that i make my 2 internet pc's get static ip address and then write a port forwarding rule so that all connections is sent to only one machine.

also i am not sure if my isp is blocking port 5500 or other ports used by vnc. there fore i want to use the default ports like 80 or 443 for this purpose which is mostly kept open by all isp.
Also how do i run the dydns service. should it be running on the internet pc or on the router becasue it has a option where it tells you to check for dydns options.

Please advice.

Sample:
10.10.10.1 (local ip)
10.10.10.2 (local ip)
130.67.23.145 (ip router, official internet adress)

Port forward:
On the router forward
5900 -> to 10.10.10.1
5901-> to 10.10.10.2

EXternal you need to connect to 130.67.23.145 5900
The router know that he need to forward this to your PC 10.10.10.1
Same for 5901
http://www.portforward.com/english/rout ... traVNC.htm

The problem is that with ADSL connection the router get a dynamic ip
adress. (130.67.23.145, 130.67.20.14,...)
To solve this issue, you can run a dynalias tool on your PC.
When your PC start, he send his ip(actual the router ip) to the dynalias
server, this service add some name to the ip.

Sample:
myhomepc.dynalias.com

Instead of checking ip router and connecting to
130.67.23.145 5900
or
130.67.20.14 5900
or
...
you simple connect to
myhomepc.dynalias.com 5900

Hi,

i did this step. i did register with dydns.com and got a host name for my pc. the hostname is internetpc.homelinux.com. when i ask my cleints to open sc and run and connect to this machine nothing happens. i have also checked port forwarding and port triggering. i have port forwarded to 5500 andf 5800. i also did try to telnet and check if the hostname and port open and it showed that the connection cannot be opened.
how else can i check this.

Please help.

Could you send a copy of your helpdesk.txt you can change the url to url.com for security reasons

how are activating the listing mode for the single click on your side??

Are you using encryption in your connection ( the dsm plugin)??

Hi

This is the helpdesk.txt file that i have used.

[HOST]
Internet support
-connect internetpc.homelinux.com:5500 -noregistry

how are activating the listing mode for the single click on your side??
-- i did not understanf this question.. please explain.

and i am not using any encryption. i have made a simple SC file. where my client would just double click on it. he is on a direct intenet connection (ADSL) and i am also connected directly to the internet (cable+wireless router). port forwardig and treggering has been enabled on the router.

please suggest.

For single click to work you need to put your pc in listening mode.

Since you are using port 5500 the default then i would try the following:

Start >Programs >Ultra VNC >Ultra VNC Viewer > Run the viewer in listening mode before you start the single click on the other side

Also if you are using Norton Antivirus try to disable the internet worm protection and see if it will work then..:)

SingleClick reach your internetpc.homelinux.com hosted on your computer running internetpc.homelinux.com and vncviewer listening.

customer SC "speak" --> router --> Internet ---> router --> vncviewer -listen 5500 and internetpc.homelinux.com
or
customer SC "speak" --> router --> Internet ---> router --> vncviewer -listen 443 and internetpc.homelinux.com

To do

1. your vncviewer listening need to be ready before SC lunched, otherwise fail

a. to your only own router, forward port 5500 or 443 to your internal computer hostname running vncviewer listening
b. you need to have your dynamic dns service running
c. you need to lunch your vncviewer listening as below:

Start... Run ...
"%programfiles%\ultravnc\vncviewer.exe" -listen 5500
or
"%programfiles%\ultravnc\vncviewer.exe" -listen 443

2. then partner/customer/friend/family lunch your SC.exe you gave.

helpdesk.txt content of your SC.exe
[HOST]
Support Internet
-connect internetpc.homelinux.com::5500 -noregistry
or
-connect internetpc.homelinux.com::443 -noregistry

3. partner and you are connected togueter :-)

Right now i have configured my router to do port forwarding so that i could have clients connecting to me. what if i am travelling and want to give remote support on the go.
say for example i am at an airport or travelling and i want to give remote support. how do i configure helpdesk.txt file for this.

One way would be to setup a repeater at your house ( provided a pc is on while you are gone)

[topic=4798]
Repeater Step by Step Version 5 With a Linux Section![/topic]

Or you can use one of UVNC repeaters that are online..;)

with the repeater,
viewer never listen, only repeater listen SC and vncviewer! There 2 outgoing connections, repeater is the ingoing connections open for the two partners.

the computer running repeater should be static public ip on DMZ (opened to Internet)

Hi,
The current set up works fine but i do not have a pc running as a repeater. what i am looking at is a solution where even if i am on the move i should be able to get incomming connections.

Is there a way i can make SC send incoming connections on port 80. I did try the -connect (my dydns address)::80, But this does not work.

is there a way i can make this work using the default ports without having to open any ports on the router. I would prefer using 80 or port 443 since these are open by default.

any suggestions are welcome.

outgoing port 80 and 443 are opened by default (from your computer to Internet)
ingoing port 80 and 443 are not open by default (from Internet to your computer)

basic.
port TCP 80 is only open for who have internal web server http
port TCP 443 is only open for who have internal secure web server https

Linksys WRT54G wireless broadband router have ability to lunch repeater linux on their board at your home with some add-on and modification software with linux

so, you won't need your computer running all time, only your router+broadband "modem" should be up and open to Internet to 2 ports your prefer open to anyone (80, 443, 5900 and 5500, whatever you prefer)

I did try the -connect (my dydns address)::80, But this does not work.
don't forget to have your vncviewer -listen 80
