Can't get SC to work with encryption!

Post by Headster »

Hi @ll,

I'm new to this forum and to UltraVNC, though I had been using various other VNC Clients before (WinVNC, TightVNC). The SC feature of UltraVNC (and of course the many other great improvements :D) have now finally convinced me of uninstalling my previous versions and giving UltraVNC a try.

So I downloaded the newest UltraVNC version 1.0.2 (setup installer), installed everything and followed the step-by-step HowTo at http://www.uvnc.com/addons/singleclick.html. I copied the MSRC4Plugin.dsm from the sub-folder plugins to the UltraVNC installation directory, started vncviewer.exe, selected "Use DSMPlugin" and MSRC4Plugin.dsm, clicked on Config and created a new keyfile new_rc4.key with 128bit. Afterwards I deleted the old rc4.key and renamed the new_rc4.key to rc4.key. Finally I copied this file to the previously downloaded and extracted custom.zip folder, edited the helpdesk.txt according to the above mentioned HowTo (with hopefully correct usage of the command line: -plugin -connect [my ip]:5500 -noregistry), added my custom logo and background image, packed everything together as a ZIP file and used the upload form at http://sc.uvnc.com to create an .exe file.

I then copied the .exe file to the machine I want to monitor, started the VNCviewer at my machine with the command vncviewer -listen -dsmplugin MSRC4Plugin.dsm and then started the .exe file on the remote machine.

If I choose to use SC without encryption (I defined multiple connection entries in helpdesk.txt before), everything works fine. The remote machine connects to my machine and I am prompted to accept or deny the connection.

So far, so good! :) But here comes the actual problem: connecting with encryption. Even more interesting, the error messages vary! Here's what I experienced so far:

1.) Nothing happens on my machine while the remote machine says that it's connected. On my machine, nothing appears, no window pops up or anything, but I can't shut down vncviewer.exe by right-clicking it in the task bar (only way would be to kill the task using the task manager). But: as soon as I shut down the .exe file on the remote machine, I am suddenly able to shut down vncviewer.exe on my machine by right-clicking it.

2.) On my machine the following error message appears: "WriteExact: DSMPlugin-RestoreBuffer Alloc Error"

3.) I sometimes get error messages on my machine that there is a protocol mismatch or that the keyfile used is different on client and server. I can't imagine this to be true as I re-built the .exe file several times and made sure that I was using the right rc4.key file.

I have, BTW, tested this both with activated and de-activated Windows XP SP2 firewall on both machines - makes no difference in the behaviour. Both machines are in the same subnet and can see each other. As I mentioned before: everything works fine as long as I don't use encryption..

If somebody has any clue or hint, please let me know. The encryption is an essential feature for me!

Thank you all in advance for your help.

Cheers,
Headster

Check this post. Pay attention to step #5 about renaming plug in.

Your problem sounds a lot like the one I had (see [topic=7661][/topic]). Mine was caused by the wrong plugin placed inside the SingleClick executable. The detailed solution is explained in the other thread, the short solution is as follows:

- Rename MSRC4Plugin_NoReg.dsm to MSRC4Plugin.dsm
- Include the plugin and your generated rc4.key in you zip-File
- Use the second creator from http://sc.uvnc.com/index.php?section=19 (the one based on REL1.00) to generate the SingleClick executable
- Download the exe and you're done

Hope this solves your problem too.

Best regards

YES!!!! It works!!! :) :) :)

BIG THX @ you guys for your help! The connection now works with encryption. I followed the steps from kaldag's post with renaming the plugin file.

Could someone please explain in detail

- Which version of what files is used for this to work.
- What SC version is created ?
- What viewer version needs to be used ?
- What plugin file version needs to be used ?
- How should the plugin be called, and where should it be installed or located, and most of all: Why does it have to be renamed?
Can't you guys create a version where this renaming and moving stuff is no longer an issue?
I mean, sorry, but this is so very VERY annoying.

What makes this all VERY confusing and almost un-do-able is the fact that UltraVNC 1.0.2 seems a lower version number than 1.28, and all plugins are installed using the installer, but none are the right version, or seem to be the right version for SC to work.
None of the manuals I have seen tell me all I need to know.

Please someone make a simple chart of both ends; the viewer-side and the sc side, and mention all files and their timestamps used for both.

Enough with the fiddling already. There are now 40 threads about just this subject alone. Not one is complete.
