Will donate: SC and MacOS compatibilty

Post by schubec »

Hello!

How much do I have to donate to you for developing either:
Make SC support the official RFB protocol
or
Make Chicken of the VNC compatible to SC

I am referring to these post:
[topic=3311][/topic]
[topic=5138][/topic]

I really want to use SC with MacOS X as the listening client.
(I could also use another MacOS X VNC client, but did not find any other than Chicken of the VNC with Listening features.)

Thank you,
Bernhard Schulz

Hi!

I don't understand your question.
TightVNC is not for MacOS X (as far as I know).

Thank you,
Bernhard

SC for Macintosh OSX

Post by DickHope »

Definately support this initiative... we support clients on both Windows and Mac platform... first priority is a SC 'server' on OSX, so that we can support from any Windows machine using standard UltraVNC client.

Hi!

The server is easy, just use osxvnc from redstone software.
It works perfect!

SC & OSX

Post by DickHope »

Sorry I did not make myself clear... we are aware of OSXvnc from redstone, and recognize that it seems to be an excellent server... what we are looking for is a 'Single Click' solution, ideally including the full feature set of UltraVNC

greetings,

any news on this? i'm also interested in this. to be clear, i would like to use ultravnc SC for windows machines and have them connect to my macintosh (running VNC in listen mode) over the internet.

if this is possible already, could someone please describe the steps on the macintosh side? i've tried chicken of the VNC and OSXVNC to no avail.

regards,
chaz

hi redge,

thanks for the reply, but i'm not sure what you mean by "vncviewer". looks like there are a lot of different apps calling themselves "vncviewer". could you please provide a link for this OSX vncviewer?

many thanks,

`vncviewer -listen -encodings hextile`

Darwinport installed TightVNC. It worked, but I had to use X11 and xterm.

This will do for the time being. Here is to hoping for Chicken of the VNC compatibility.

I do think that an OS X SC is kinda far off. I'm a little less eager for that, but that'll be cool too.

I found a way to have a poor man's OSXvnc SC.

This is pretty technical and I just tinker with scripts. In no way should this be ever said as out of beta or even an alpha.

this is a really rough outline

Download Platypus
Make sure Xcode is installed. you'll need Interface Builder.
Download OSXvnc. If you have problems downloading it, go through the front door of sourceforge.
Inside the OSXvnc application, find OSXvnc-server inside the MacOS folder.
Pull it out and put it on your Desktop.
In platypus, make sure that file is included.
Edit the script, and append

Code: Select all

"$1/Contents/Resources/OSXvnc-server" -connecthost <Whatever your computer is>
and save. Although if you have a diffrent port, add -connectPort <port> .
Give the App a name.
Save it somewhere, and dive into the App.
Go in the resources Folder and edit the nib file inside en.lproj. Add text stuff. So far I have no clue how to add graphics, but just tack on your contact info stuff. Might wanna add a quit this app to take away control message.

Save and enjoy. I can't seem to figure out how to add encryption and it isn't as full featured as UltraVNC SC. But it works and you are in control of the Mac, from a client's Single Click.

Oh yeah, this is compatible with CotVNC and doesn't need resorting to the command line and X11 one.

If you just want listen mode, then run something like this in the terminal. You won't have to start up the client. Also, you won't get 2 icons in the dock either.

VNCViewer.app/Contents/MacOS/VNCViewer listen

Platypus to the rescue again. Throw VNCViewer in and append this to the script.

Code: Select all

"$1/Contents/Resources/VNCViewer.app/Contents/MacOS/VNCViewer" listen
Check "Run in Background" . Name the thing and save.

Superb tip on the osxvnc reverse conneciton mode. I finally got singleclick working with encryption for windows->windows conections. Now Ive got an SC solution for Mac clients to initiate a reverse connection to my Windows box running UltraVNC in listen mode. works great (though without encryption).

As an aside, if you launch osxvnc the normal way (from the gui) there is a 'Connect Host' box a tthe bottom of the general settings screen. This is for initiating reverse connection. I guess I never paid attention to it before.
.. The platypus method is great for a simple 'singleclick' way to launch though...

Im still trying to figure out how to get the osxvnc process to quit after the session is done.. Ive jsut discovered platypus. sweet.

Thanks

There is that, but the source is nowhere to be found (It says it is under the GPL) and I have no contact info for the author.

Also the forum is locked or utterly dead with latests posts dating back to 2004.

Found an email, will post response if any.
Having troubleshooted a friend by using UltraVNC SC, I wondered if there was a similar solution for Macs. I hastily threw some internals together and stuck them inside a Platypus bundle to make some instructions for easy use in this thread on the UltraVNC forums. I want to improve this Single Click thing and I am asking you to put a link to the source on its page. Had me going when I read the license, but I was dissapointed that the source wasn't posted according to the GPL.

i've got this running very well. to re-iterate, the setup is that windows users will download or open the ultravncSC executable from a website. my computer (a mac) is behind a firewall (NAT on port 5500) and is running "VNC Viewer Enterprise Edition E4.2beta6" in listen mode.

The _critical_ part to this setup is to:
1) use the default port, 5500
2) make sure your firewall's NAT is properly configured
3) VNC Viewer preferences should be:
8 colours
Encoding: Hextile (_NOT_ "Auto Detect")

if you don't change the VNC Viewer preferences, the session is WAY too slow. for me, i don't care about graphics, colors, etc., i just want a quick session to troubleshoot the bozo at the end of the connection.

it's quick and pretty darn stable (i've had one session run for 8hrs). this makes for a great way to give desktop support to windows users while staying on a mac.

good luck!

Hi there, in another thread I mentioned that I use Vine Viewer to listen and it works with SC:

not really relevant to the original post, but FYI here is an implementation of reverse VNC for OS X - worked fine when connecting to my Windows listening viewer: http://www.ozonehouse.com/mark/blog/cod ... e_VNC.html

i would like to be able to help distant nontechie friends with macs so am interested in a mac "SC". i confess lack of experience with mac development environments but am always willing to learn. would it be possible to produce this same functionality result without employing Platypus and/or Xcode (Interface Builder)? are they merely providing editing capability, or what roles do they play in the resulting executable? if i borrow a mac laptop from a local non-techie friend, how would i observe whether xcode is already there? how likely am i to cause any trouble on her mac by downloading these things? is trouble any more or less likely if i try to tuck them aside in some out of the way folder?
