what does a grainy icon in system tray mean?

Post by merlyn »

I've been running Ultr@VNC on a windows XP desktop for some time and it's been great. Today I wanted to install the server app on my win2k laptop to control with another laptop and it too went smoothly, but the server icon in the system tray appears grainy, in low resolution, as if it were shaded, giving me the impression that the connection, although active, is somehow impaired. Has anyone seen this, or knows what it means?

Thanks.

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling several times - this kinda turned out to be an all day project, same results. Here's a grab of the systray:

It actually looks better in the captured image than in the tray.. much bluer, but you can still tell that the dithering isn't fine, nor is the coloring continuous.

For comparison, here's what the viewer icon looks like, both are captured at the same scale and resolution:

yes, I can confirm this with W2K.
I an icon file there are several versions of a picture with different resolutions and color depths.
Somehow Windows 2000 chooses a very low-res version.
