I am using ultraVNC 1.0.1 and 1.0. My problem is sometimes when I connect to a machine I get to where I can enter may password (that works fine) but then everything disappears. The machines don't have a screen saver password or anything like that and they are running 98SE Is there a way to fix this?

It appears that several people are having this same issue, including myself!

What i've seen so far leads me to believe you need to verify 2 things.
1) Make sure the server side pc does not have the screensaver enabled and set with password protection (you've already checked this)
2) If your internet connection goes through a router (mine does) that uses NAT then you need to set up port forwarding for the VNC ports. Typically this is 5900.

Do you have any firewalls? Either on the Host or Client sides?

Not very helpful i know but it's all ive found so far. I'll try tomorrow and let you know what i find out. If you get yours working let me know what you did ;).

We are not running NAT I have this running on a couple 98SE machines with no problems. No, not running any other firewall software on the 98SE machines. I really don't like the inconsistency of this program.. Buy hey its free I guess as the saying goes you get what you pay for. I'll post back if I find anything out.

Well so far I've tried RealVNC, UltraVNC, as well a look into a program called "Hamachi" and so far, no luck yet.

Maybe our setups are somehow similar...The server side is what i'm trying to connect to (work) so i dont know much about it other than its WinXP SP2, so here's what I've got on my "viewer" (Home) side:
Windows XP Pro
ZoneAlarm Pro
Netgear FVS318 Router/VPN Firewall

Cable comes in through my router and into my PC. Im using CISCO VPN to connect to work and that aspect works fine....its when i try to run VNC that i run into this problem. Viewer closes and thats the end of that...

Any luck yet on your end?

Iv read somewhere about ultra VNC not liking Zone Alarm. Not sure where I found that. That could be your problem right there. You could also try turning off the XP firewall as well and see if it works. No luck on my end though.

Actually, I've already tried disabling my ZoneAlarm firewall completely and no change...

Do you have a router? I'm trying to ensure i have the correct Port Forward stuff set up but I have no idea. I need to figure out is when i go to my routers port settings, am i supposed to use the IP of my PC (internal) or am i supposed to put in the IP of the WAN (external-internet)?

This is just ridiculous. People at work have access, why not me!? :crazy:

As far as port forwarding you should set up your router so that the internal IP get forwarded to the the outside and that the port numbers are also correct

For Example: If the machine behind your work firewall is 192.168.0.x and you want to get to it from the outside you would go into the port forwarding on your work router and put in that machines IP address (192.168.0.x). Then go to you PC that is outside (home) of your network and type in your work routers external/WAN IP address. If you are not sure of your (work) routers IP address you can use http://www.findmyip.com to find that out. Your work router will have to have a static IP address for this to work.

Well I don't about any of that but I got in! :D

I've finally logged into my work pc from my house. It is truly the strangest thing: if I lock my work computer and try to connect from home I get that error message but if I leave my work computer unlocked I can connect no problem! Does anybody have any suggestions on how to get around this? It is really a security issue for me to leave my computer unlocked when I'm at home; heck I lock it when I'm away from it but still at work.

Suggestions?

Do you have a password protected screen savor?? If so that is not supported yet.:(

Do you have Uvnc installed as as service or application??

if you have this issue, it mean, you do not (yet) installed your vnc server ready as system that able to allow unlocking a workstation with their password.

as vnc server running as user, you can't unlock screen saver/locked screen.
as vnc server running as system before windows logon/desktop appear, you can unlock screen saver.

tested successfully ultravnc server 1.0.2 (2nd test) over win98SE with their unofficial service pack 2.1a available below:

By any chance are you logged into the win98 machine with windows logon?? or are you cancelling out the logon screen :idea:

Thanks redge and bevtech! That last problem I had was resolved by reinstalling as a service in Windows (thought I had already done that but apparently not).

Now I can easily work from home 24 7 365!! Oh shoot, what did i just get myself into.... :o Thanks again guys.
