Failure to connect to server...

Post by Bwangster12 »

I am a new user...

I set up the server on my home computer making sure to open the ports within my router. When I come to my office and try to connect it does not let me. It lets me connect to my PC when I am on my basement PC, then again I am within my IP.

Please help.

FAQ--Port forwarding NAT/router/firewall for any VNC flavor

[topic=3859][/topic]

Would be a good place to start. If you have a router then your Ips would be non routable example 192.168.x.x these only work in a LAN network. You have to port forward the WAN( Internet Ip) and possibly use a service like dyndns to connect to your computer outside your local network..:)

I followed the link and basically the only solid info i gathered from it was:
"If your ISP provide you a dynamic IP to you, you need to subscribe to a dynamicDNS service provider supported from your NAT broadband router and put your hostname freshly created and configure it to forward external port to your internal ip address port of your NAT/ broadband router"

I believe i have a dynamic IP because I see i have the "Obtain an IP address automatically" bubble selected. If this is true, could you provide a little more detail about how to set up this dynamicDNS thing? I've been to the port forward site before and I just want to make sure I've got everyting set up correctly first (i think im only forwarding my internal ip not the WAN one)...

I've been trying to get VNC working on my own for a few weeks now and I'm hoping that I'll finally get connected sometime within the next few millinea

Question...

I definitely think that I have a dynamic IP... is that what's causing my connection failure? I did go into my router and add the 192.XXX IP to it and open ports 5900 and 5800.

If I sign up for DynDNS will that fix my problem? I am very new to this... please advise.

Thanks,

I would guess that you are a dymanic IP. I have had sucess for dyndns should be free for you though. Unless they changed something. Well for testing purposes you can find out your ip address by www.whatismyip.com then use that number to see if you have forwarding setup properly..:)

I thought I had it set up properly... but now I'm confused.

When I view my IP address on whatismyip.com I get one IP and then when I go to cmd->ipconfig... it doesn't show that IP anywhere. It shows something like 192.XXX.... and so on.

Which IP do I put into my router's configuration page with ports 5900 and 5800?

The router has two Ip addresses.. One in a LAN 192.168.X.X the other is the WAN.. Whats my Ip should be showing the WAN address..

When working with your router you mostly access it via the 192.168.x.x address..:)

It uses Network Adress Translation (NAT) to convert all the information from you lan to the wan then translates it back. This is where the port forwarding is important. It tells the NAT table that information on port 5900 is to be forwarded to 192.168.x.x ( server ) basically it just forwards information to another destination like forwarding your phone to another number.:D

Sorry to be confusing you that is not the attention..:)

Sounds like you have it set up correctly..

I do have the 192.168.... entered twice in my router configs with ports 5900 and 5800.

So now if I go home and do the DynDNS thing you think I'll be able to connect? What else could be the issue besides me having a Dynamic IP, which I'm pretty sure I have because I looked on the support pages of my ISP.

Interesting question...

When I go to portforward.com and go thru how they say to set up my router, I think I am reading that it shows the XX.XX.XX.XX IP as the one to set up in my router and not the 192.168.... It shows the XX.XX.XX.XX as my external IP.

Is that possible?
