Maybe some help

Post by airsmith006 »

I have set up plenty of routers with VNC, so hopefully I can help (although I am really excited about learning how to use N2N, which should alleviate a lot of the problem)
To connect to UVNC on another person's computer (the Server) behind a NAT/Firewall/Router, you will need to open a port. By default, VNC uses port 5900, but I like to change it to another port just to try to keep the hacker port scanners on their toes. The port needs to be forwarded on the receiving end, not you (the viewer's) end.
Different routers call port forwarding different things, but essentially it looks like this:
Public IP > Port 5910 > NAT > Port 5910 > Private IP
Soooo, as an example:
16.23.43.18 Port 5910 > Port 5910 >192.168.0.5
Some notes worth mentioning:
Some routers (keeping in mind a router is, or can be, a basic firewall) allow you to specify one external port connects to a different internal port. This REALLY helps screw up the port scanning hackers.
This would look like this:
16.23.43.18 Port 5930 > Port 5910 >192.168.0.5
In my opinion, you don't really need a software firewall on a computer behind a router.
Hope this helps, am working on a PPT presentation with all the steps to set it up, coming soon

Oops, forgot last step:
to connect from your viewer to their computer you would open the viewer and enter 16.23.43.18:5930
In the last example above:
16.23.43.18 Port 5930 > Port 5910 >192.168.0.5
(making sure the server portion of VNC is set to port 5910)
You should get the login screen.
Recommend you not try MSLogon at the beginning
Hope this helps
