the client hangs on "negotiate protocol version"

Post by bruco »

I use vncserver and vncviewer version 1.01 both on win 98 pc.
I have configured the DSM plugin no registry version (MSRC4Plugin_NoReg.dsm) following the instructions.
A simple connection works well, but when I enable the DSM plugin on both server and client, the client freezes on "Negotiate protocol version".
Can anybody help me? Thanks.

Also make sure that the plugin and the rc4.key file are in the main uvnc folder instead of the plugin directory..example

try beta 1.1.9.8 MSRC4Plugin119RC8.zip
did make any better ?

Launch the viewer with dsmplugin commandline:
"%programfiles%\UltraVNC\vncviewer.exe" -dsmplugin MSRC4Plugin_NoReg.dsm -listen 5500

SingleClick for use by customer/friend preconfigured + plugin encryption
helpdesk.txt
[HOST]
-plugin -connect 192.168.0.100::5500 -noregistry

the rc4.key must be identical and present on folder of vncviewer (and not subfolder)
and as well, a genuine copy of your own rc4.key must be inside the SingleClick

Solved. Indeed, it was my fault. I launched vncviewer from the desktop, and the field From: was empty. When inserting vncviewer path, all has gone ok.
I apologize for my mistake and I thank you for your help.

I also get this error message, but there's a big difference. I set everything up yesterday and it all worked fine, with and without DSM. It worked over both the internet and within my intranet.

It continued to work this morning, but this afternoon, I get the hang on "negotiate protocol version".

I haven't been able to check the server yet, but is there anything that could cause this at the client end?

Only been using UltraVNC for a day, but it seems fantastic compared to RealVNC that I was using (love full-screen, file transfer and encryption). Just hope i can get this sorted so I can keep using it.

Thanks in advance.

And today when the problem happens? With or without DSM plugin?
Can you try from a different client?

All good today. I got home and it worked immediately over the intranet, using the local computer name and the external domain name (although I'm not sure if this was going through the firewall).

I did a reboot anyway, and today I can get in okay.

It looks like something funny with my server or firewall - I'll keep an eye on it, but looking good at the moment.

Thanks for getting back.

My experience is identical to digbyk's, except it has happened two days in a row.

Worked fine all morning, then I got the could not negotiate protocol message. Maybe it doesn't work late :-)

As for digbyk, reboot at home solved the lockup which meant I could login again today. How can I troubleshoot this?

Same problem here; it connects fine first (though seems to be less stable then when not using the encryption plug-in). Sometimes it drops and can't connect anymore, it hangs on the Negotiate thingy.

After a random amount of time it works fine again. I've been using the last version of Ultravnc for a couple of months without any problems, this just happens since using the No_Reg plugin.

I'll do some more testing without it, just to be sure.

If you have a dsm crash you need to restart your pc running the server. Also make sure that all dsm versions and keys are indentical.

Make sure that the server is using the dsm in the admin properties.
Make sure that the viewer is using the same dsm plugin as the server or the command line is correct

Also make sure that no firewall is blocking the traffic on the ports UVNC uses..;)

yes it does
its likely that when using dsm plugin , after a client timeout
the server side still keep the connection ,
regredless of 'multi viewser connections' settings

I experience the same problem.

The first time I can connect without any hassle. But after a few amounts of connections the client hangs "negotiate protocol version".

I use all the latest updates which are UVNC v1.0.2 with MSRC4 NO REG v1.2.2.0

Testing without the plugin won't do it for me because I wouldn't lile the idea of getting access unencrypted.
