Can't connect from laptop to desktop

Post by burnhero »

Problem:
I am able to run the VNC server on my laptop and use my desktop as a viewer to control my laptop with no problems. However;I am not able to even connect to my desktop (running server) from my laptop(running viewer). I have had these problems with both pcs connected locally to my router. For giggles I set up port forwarding and tried to use my outside IP to get this working as well.

Protocols:
I double checked that I had all the necessary protocols (Client for Microsoft networks, File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks, NWLINK IPX/SPX/NetBIOS, TCP/IP, etc.) on both wireless adapters.

Shut Down Firewalls:
I turned off all personal firewalls (mcafee and windows firewall on laptop, and windows firewall on desktop).

Network Set-UP:

At home I am running a DLink wireless card on my desktop into a WRT54G Linksys router. I am using built in Intel wireless on my laptop to connect to the same router with no other connectivity issues between machines. I can browse shares from both systems to both systems and have no other issues.

Latest VNC Software:
I have the latest version of VNC Server and Viewer running on both my Dell desktop and my Dell Laptop. I do not have the DSM plug-in selected in set-up.

OS's
I am running updated Windows XP PRO w/SP2 legit on my laptop and XP Corporate on my desktop. I struggled for hours trying to get this to work and nothing! I am using stock settings on the server and viewer for both machines. I am about ready to redo my desktop with XP PRO Corporate w/SP2 just to make sure that's not the problem; but I'd rather not waste away 2+ hours of my life.

Any ideas on what my next troubleshooting steps are? Do you think it's a Windows version problem? I've had other apps working within my network (games, ventrilo servers, etc.).

I've read through the FAQ on the Forums and haven't found anything; any help would be appreciated!

Thanks!
Gabe

Have you checked if the server port is used by an other process ?

Have you launched a sniffer (e.g. ethereal) on server to verify that packets come in ?

No, I haven't done either of those. If the port was being used though; would my desktop still be able to connect to my laptop?

What sniffer would you recommend? Are there any Freeware and/or GNU licensed sniffers that you like?

Thanks!
