This server doens not have a valid password enbled

Post by XP and Win2003 »

When i try to contact my Win2003 server , a message appears :
"
This server doens not have a valid password enbled.
Until a password set, incoming connections cannot be accepted.

Admin properties is set to "Require Mslogon", because the server is in
an active directory and user/pass/domaine is required.

Do you have an idea ?

Thanks .

kwown bug,
even you don't use classic VNC authentication but MS Logon I or II
you need to complete vnc password field
winvnc admin properties...
--- authentication ---
VNC password

for Active Directory
better if you active one more checkbox [X]New MS-Logon

Same problem - have password?

Post by whizkid »

I am running VNC between two XP-SP2 machines on the same LAN.

I have no problem connecting from the first to the second machine.

When I try to connect from the second to the first, It tells me 'This machine must have a valid password...'. I do have the VNC classic password; in fact entered and changed it several times; started and stopped the service, but nothing seems to allow me to make a connection?

Any ideas?

whizkid,

What is different on the Machine that will not let connect to??

Did it have any flavor of VNC on the pc??

Do you have any firewall software on the pc that maybe causing transmissions problems??

Do you have the MSlogon configured properly?? I would stick with classic auth. until you get it working on the pc that will not conneto to.

Well, I have the same / near problem here.

vnc service is on the win 2000 server;
client - windows xp (at this time, it really doesn't matter what os).

1st episode
When trying to connect, server response either "does not have valid pass bla bla" or "connection has been rejected" - mostly first one.

2st episode
running vnc server's executable over already installed and running service;
Action the same like in 1st episode.
But if client listen mode was on, it is possible to allow this connection by Add new client on server side. And it works fine.

Question
Where and how is stored this server password? Cannot check if one even was saved. For sure, I have no key in registry for that. How can I be sure, I'm allowed to connect this server any time I need if only service's running, i.e., anyone is logged on the server.

Thanks!

In service mode, the password is in HKLM\Software\ORL\WinVNC3\Default\Password
This is a REG_BINARY.
In application mode it's in HKCU\Software\ORL\WinVNC3\Password

restricted accound on XP doesn't work

Post by Casa »

Hello,

I have the same problem on WinXP SP2, with no firewall activated both side (server and viewer) on a LAN network, both computer run network fine using MS File Sharing. VNC was installed using administrator account on ntfs filesystem.
When I want to start the server under a restricted account, it says me "No password has been configured...." and don't let me even see the configuration screen. When I execute the server under an admnistrator account everything works fine and I can set up a VNC password, and MS Logon II. Returning to a user account, VNC server doesn't want to start.
(last version of VNC, MS Logon or MS Logon II activated, vnc password set, no firewall)
thanks for your help

Casa,
Make sure that your following regsitry sections have premissions to read and write to the following sections for your user account:

Hkey_Local_Machine\Software\ORL

Being that everything works great on the on the aministrator account it almost has to be a registry permission or a directory permission on the C:\program Files\UltraVNC\

thank you for your answer.
I don't know how to change permission for a user for a special section in the registry.
Furthermore I was wrong the server is on a FAT32 (not NTFS) XP Pro system so this is not a directory permission problem.

Okie. Problem can be solved by adding extra registry value called Password :)

How to use vncserver on non adminitrator account

Post by Casa »

redge wrote: Known bug

I found a method to allows a non administrator account to start and setup UltraVNC server without the message 'No password....' which prevents to start the server on winxp pro limited account:
First log on in Windows to an admin account and change the limited account in which you want to use UltraVNC server to an administrator using the account manager in the control panel.
Then log to this account just set as administrator
Install under this one the UltraVNC server
Setup all default administrator properties you need for the connection (including password, mslogon, ports to use, etc...)
Start the server in order to test the connection with a viewer. Close the server.
Log off this account
Log again to the main administrator account
Set back the user account to a limited account.
Log off the admin account and log on the limited account on wich you installed the UltraVNC server.
Start UltraVNC server: you may no longer have the message 'No password has been configured...' and you can use UltraVNC without problem. Be advice that you can't do any change in the admin default properties. If you want to modify any option you have to temporally make the limited account an administrator account.

Hope this would help.

Casa, your posts sound like you use the UltraVNC server in application mode, not in service mode.
Register it as a service, then do the configuration.

to clarifiy
Known bug

I don't think could be solved for vnc server as user application (can't handle Ctrl-Alt-Del), maybe a chance to be solved as vnc server running as system like logme tell another user.
I just think would have a message back from vnc server to vnc viewer that tell the error occured like realvnc do (need higher RFB than 3.3.6 for message travel two ways viewer - server ?)

hope this more clear.

doesn't seem to like passwords...

I'm still getting the "This server does not have a valid password enabled.
Until a password set, incoming connections cannot be accepted. "
Have reset the VNC password, then turned off the MS Logon's and reset the VNC password. Reloaded service, nada. Same after deleting the password reg entry and resetting again. Oh, and I'm using an 8 character password, with number, upper and lower case.

With MS logon 2 set I get the windows user and logon screen but it reverts to the error after.

It's a Windows 2003 system, no windows firewall running, and inside the corporate firewall.

with UltraVNC running as a service, you need to do the configuration when UltraVNC is running in service mode.
This should create entries in HKLM\Software\ORL\WinVNC3\Default

Yo Woodsy,

I was having the exact same issues.
Try this:
Create the password reg key as per earlier requests
Restart the VNC service

I was bashing away at this for quite a while before I realised the service restart was the key

Ciao!

Register it as a service, then do the configuration.
On the other hand, it is recommanded in the guidelines not to run it as a service, when you have a firewall like zonealarm running.

Not true,
you just need to do something to ZoneAlarm for prevent this behavior.

Dont install inside RDP, wont work. Install it on the console.

You can script a batch file to install.

You will need to download psexec.exe, part of PStools by microsoft/System Internals

REM Batch Start
REM Remote computer name
set ComputerName=192.168.1.2

NET USE \\%computerName%\IPC$ /user:administrator

REM This will stop the service, required if you are doing a remote upgrade

psexec \\%computerName% -s -i -d net stop"VNC Server"

REM Copy your local VNC files to the remote PC.
xcopy "C:\temp\VNCInstall\vnc" "\\%computerName%\C$\Program Files\ultraVNC\*.*" /r/i/c/h/k/e
xcopy "C:\temp\VNCInstall\Reg" "\\%computerName%\C$\" /r/i/c/h/k/e

REM Use Regedit to export the local VNC registry settings (from your PC or use included .reg file) to the remote PC. Note: If you prefer you can export the file locally and then copy it.

REM import the above registry file on the remote PC.

psexec \\%computerName% -s -i -d regedit /s C:\temp\VNCInstall\import.reg

REM You are using regedit on the remote PC to perform this command.

REM PsExec to install the remote winvnc service.

psexec \\%computerName% -s -i -d "C:\Program Files\ultravnc\winvnc.exe" -install

REM Use PsExec to start the remote "VNC Server" service.

psexec \\%computerName% -s -i -d net start "VNC Server"

REM Batch End

Import.reg

I had the same problem on Windows Server 2003. I fixed it by uninstalling everything, rebooting, installing the same program again, but did a few things different which caused it to work this time:

- Second time I did not install mirror/video drivers. (I just wanted it to work.)
- I checked out the Program Files directory for UltraVNC and ran check_install.exe from the command prompt.
- I started up the server from Program Files, ran Admin Properties, set the password, clicked ok.
- I was then able to connect remotely.
- I double checked the program was installed as a service, and starts up automatically.
