File transfer crashes UVNC when remote folders are listed

Hi,

I can use UVNC to control the remote machine, but entering 'File transfer' will result in a lockup as soon as I attempt to list the remote machine folders. Some folders do appear, but it all falls over part way through the listing and I have to shut down the viewer.

Is this a remote machine folders access setting issue? Any ideas would be welcome. Thanks!

Terry,

Do you have file transfer enabled on your remote pc??

If you are running it as a service you can also check
User Impersonation ( but only if you are running winvnc as a windows service

Maybe the remote machine does not have these options checked?

Hi Bevtech,

Many thanks for your suggestion, but this is not the problem. File transfer is enabled, but it still locks up during folder listing. It seems to be something on the server PC that causes it, as another machine works fine.

No, I never solved it. Fortunately, I don't use file transfers very often and so it isn't a huge problem, but it would be nice to sort it out!

Do you have the same version of the Unzip32.dll and Zip32.dll in the directory of the server as well as your viewer?? Some users use the stand alone viewer and forget to put the zip files in the same folder

Thanks bevtech, I checked and the versions are the same. The file transfer is hanging before attempting to transfer any files at all, though - simply browsing folders causes it to crash. Not all folders, but not random either - always the same folders! I can't see why, though!

check on remote computer
check folder properties (readonly or full ? non latin caracter ? mean foreign language unreadabke from FileTransfer

start a full check/repair remote computer for hard drive failure (bad sector)
look the event viewer application of remote computer when failure occur.

Nothing unusual, there was a ' in one of the files it stopped at, but I renamed it and got the same problem. Folder properties are OK.

Hard Drive is good. Event viewer reports: -

On Server: 26/1/2006 18:05 Client xx.xx.xx.x disconnected

Still trying to investigate further, but can't see any common link between folders causing it to crash, other than it tends to hang on folders with a lot of content.

Also discovered today, that viewers connected through LAN (same side of router) using 192.169.0.2 to connect to server, can browse folders no problem, and transfer files.

Problem only occurs when connecting over the internet...?

after update win xp sp2, some software fail.
reading file ODBC.U32 crash ntdll.dll

There the fix, replace old "ODBC.U32" with this new one.

if you dont'have it, (I believe you had search on hidden files and system folders)
you don't need it,
you need to know wish software do you use broken after sp2 installed.
(windows update done ?)

Yes, I checked hidden and system folders!

I have the same symptoms. Connecting locally: no problem. Connecting remotely to my parents' computer 800 miles away: file transfer often (not always) locks up when trying to navigate to the destination folder on the server end. I'm using the MSRC4Plugin, no MS Logon or User Impersonation, from Win XP Pro viewer to Win XP Home Edition server.

I'd be grateful for suggestions on how to debug or resolve it. I have successfully sent one file and one directory (separate sessions), but other times it locks up -- sometimes allowing me to close the FT dialog, sometimes not, which forces me to kill it in Task Manager.

For ref, I'm NOT using the MSRC4 Plugin, and using WinXP Pro on both server and viewer PCs.

Marc, the fact that you don't use the plugin or XP Home Edition outwardly eliminates them from the puzzle. Maybe we can gain more insight by comparing other details.

When it locks up for me, the server PC's Internet connection hangs (which comes first?). I've taught my mother to reboot the modem/router to clear it, because I haven't been there to experiment with reconnecting. I'll try turning on logging there next time she's standing by to recover from my experimenting.

I'm using port forwarding to permit the traffic through the NAT routers on both ends. I don't suppose the server PC's antispyware software is trapping something, but I'll check the logs.

In my case, the Server's internet connection stays on. I've actually been connected through other remote admin software at the same time so that I can watch what happens when UltraVNC hangs!

The Server is port forwarded through a router but my PC (the viewer) has a direct connection to the internet.

You just gave me an idea, though - the server is running Spybot S&D and also Javacool's SpywareBlaster, I'll try disabling protection from both of them. It'll have to be next week, though, as the PSU on the server just died and a replacement is on order!

It'd be interesting to know what your router logs say, that might give us an insight. I'll keep you posted on any findings I have...

I found a round-about way to be on the server end of a remote file transfer. I connected to my parents' server, then launched a viewer back to my wife's server session and transferred a file and a directory from their computer to my wife's. Didn't fail, but if it had, I would be able to explore the server symptoms and restore the Internet connection here.

My parents' router (Westell 2100) doesn't seem to have a logging feature, but they have a Norton firewall, and it shows my connection port.

I looked up VNC configuration on portforwarding.com and noticed that it recommends both TCP and UDP for the 5500, 5800 and 5900 ports. I have only TCP enabled -- wonder if that would hamper file transfers?

The other thought I've had is I notice that my parents' DSL connection drops occasionally, even while they're not on the computer. I drop in, leave a message on Messenger, later find them "offline" on Messenger, still later drop in again and see the message I left untouched, so I know they didn't shut down the system. I wonder if the couple of FT failures I saw were coincidental with random connection drops. If so, I'd like to see UltraVNC recover more gracefully and wow me with that continue-where-you-left-off feature!

The server I'm having problems with is behind a Netgear Router, I've forwarded 5500, 5800 and 5900 for both TCP and UDP, so that's not what's causing the problem, although you probably should for UDP, too.

I've transferred files and directories successfully a few times lately, so I thought maybe the issue had disappeared. However, this afternoon it failed again while waiting to browse the server directory (after clicking on the C: drive). It locks up my client viewer and disables the Internet connection on the server side.

I had turned WinVNC logging on, so I captured the following excerpt from the server PC. I wonder if it offers any insight to developers? Is the remote host socket error from my client end, since this is a server log? Is there anything else I can check on either end?

Is there any more graceful way to interrupt the client FT when it hangs -- Ctrl-Break and Escape don't work, so I have to force it out with Task Manager and that drops the viewer session as well. If it means anything, I found two FT apps and one viewer in XP Task Manager.
