UltraVNC / Windows ME / Gateway Solo 1150

Post by mfackler »

I am trying to run Ultra VNC Server 1.0.1 Build Aug 6 2005 on a Gateway Solo Notebook and Windows ME. When I try connecting with my viewer (Win XP) on local network, I get prompted for a password, the password is "accepted" then nothing else happens. The screen on the notebook is blank the locked up? It seems to me something may be fishy with the video driver in the WIN ME. (All MS updates have been installed) I can connect with the server on XP and the viewer on ME?

I have searched and found may people with similar problems but haven't found a fix.

BTW I have encryption turned off and am running server as an app for now.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

PS It does the same thing if the server is installed as a service. Furthermore it does the same thing on a loop back conection.

Please give me some ideas.

Mike

I have exact same problem.
I'm running UltraVNC 1.0.1 on old HP Pavilion N3250 notebook with Windows 98 installed.

After entering password in the client, client just turns itself off without any message, and screen in my windows turns black, after pressing a keys, I see messed up screen. Windows seems to work, since pressing ctrl-alt-del twice reboots the computer.

There's no problem with TightVNC so I belive some specific UltraVNC feature is responsible for this.

I will fire up my old sony laptop and make sure that ultra vnc 1.0.1 installed and see if I can reproduce this issue..:) I will post my findings on this thread. I am pretty sure that I tested this before and it works but will double check. I do recall a post a few months with this exact same thing. Seems to be some issues with Other Flavors of VNC installed on the pcs at the same time.

Takeda, and other readers

My test settings

Ultra VNC 1.01
One windows 98 box
one windows XP box
using classic authenicaiton only
On a lan

with msrc plugin on and off!!

I would suggest that if you are connecting to win9X boxes that you only stick with classic auth.

I can connect to the xp box from 98
and I can connect to the 98 box to xp

With or without msrc plugin enabled with no problems at all..:)
Now windows ME is based off of windows 98 so if 98 works windows me should as well

What video cards are you dealing with??
What Antivirus are you dealing with??
What Firewall are you using??

Make sure to turn on the winvnc.log on(under the Admin properties) and post it the contents on here from the servers giving you the problems..;)

Hopefully some other users will have an answer for you..:)

In my situation as a client I use Windows 2000 Pro SP4, but I don't think this matters.

I didn't use this plugin at all, in fact I don't use any plugin (I think - default install).

I cannot find exact specification on HP website, but according to Windows 98 it's:
Trident CyberBlade i7 AGP (8420-64)

None

Blank Screen

Post by rWaag »

I also am experiencing this.
Viewer: Windows XP, router/nat, cable
Server; IBM notebook, Windows ME, DSL modem/nat

I get "Enter Password" screen(viewer), enter user/pasword, VNC Viewer Status screen shows "Password Accepted" and server screen goes blank. No change on viewer screen, just status window as noted. Thats it...no remote desktop...nothing. Ultimately have to reboot server PC.

Any help on this thread would be appreciated.

I didn't mentioned that, but it actually can be seen from the logs. The log I created by doing loopback connection. So mentioning Windows 2000 in my post was totally unnecessary (it looks like client doesn't matter at all).

Takeda,
Is your server is windows 2000 box?
Is your server a win9X box?

[Quote]

Verify if the server is running as service.
Unlocking a screen can only be done when in service mode, runnning
as application, you do not have enough access rights to unlock a screen.

Also I am wondering if you have any other flavor of VNC installed on the server pc and running. I am wondering if they share some registry settings and my be causing you some unnessary grief

I am really puzzled by this because Ultra VNC 1.0.1 works fine on my sony laptop with windows 98 fe and I can connect to it with XP pro with no errors at all..:)

The problems I'm hawing are on Windows 98 (server is running on it).
bevtech wrote:

Does it matter in windows 98? Anyway I started WinVNC as a service and this happened again.
bevtech wrote:Unlocking a screen can only be done when in service mode, runnning as application, you do not have enough access rights to unlock a screen.
I think this matters in Windows 2000, but the server is running on w98.
bevtech wrote:Also I am wondering if you have any other flavor of VNC installed on the server pc and running.
Well... I installed other VNC (TightVNC) after I noticed this issue (I though that perhaps UltraVNC is supposed to be Win NTonly), the other VNC worked nicely. But, once I found this thread, I uninstalled TightVNC and installed UltraVNC, so I could provide some debugging informations.
bevtech wrote:I am wondering if they share some registry settings and my be causing you some unnessary grief
While installing, I checked option that supposed to remove old registry entries...

Well obviously there is a problem, since I'm not the only one here.

I do agree that there is an issues and I am not trying to say that you are not having a problem. I just can not reproduce the problem. I forwarded information that a developer gave me and I also stressed the fact that windows 98 but I havent heard a responce back.

I only used Ultra VNC RC18, 1.0 and 1.01 so none of my machines never had other vnc flavors installed.

I am sorry but I am out of ideas.:(( For the time being...
