Mayby it's me but I have no idea what to do with this program!
I always used PcAnywhere and it worked great, easy simple and effective.
The only problem was, it's not free.
Now I bought a new PC and when I installed all the software I tried my luck with the free program VNC Server
Bad choise !!!
First of all I can't find a easy manual of how to use this program.
I have to PC's connected with a router and ADSL internet connection.
I also read in this forum that you have to open severla ports for the program to work.
Did this and now what ???
When I use the viewer in listen mode on PC 1, I see that it's listening on port 5500. So I opened this port as well.
When I use the server on the other program and choose for the option "Add new client", I fill in my IP number and press the "connect" button.
After a while I receive the message that "no connection can be made or no connection can be found"
Even when I specify the port number after the IP number there is no connection made.
When I use the server on PC 1 and the server on PC 2 and want to make a connection through the internal IP number from my router the connection is succesfull. But only when I connect from server to server (so the viewer program is not used)
When I use the viewer on PC 1 in listen mode and the server on PC 2 and connect them through the internal IP number followed by :5500 it looks like a connection is made because my desktop changes to a blank background but nothing else happens.
What is going wrong here or do I need other things beside the server and viewer program ????
Hopefully somebody can help me and explain how to use this programm because it's driving me mad !!!

please help !
kees, basically the program comes with 2 components. The Server and a Viewer.
You install the Server component on the machine that you want to have remote access to.
You use the Viewer to connect to the "Server" machine.
I suggest you read the documentation in http://www.realvnc/com. A good place to start is http://www.realvnc.com/gettingstarted.html.
have fun!

at first, Ultr@VNC has been tested on many of our systems. when you couldn't make a connection in such a simple domestic network setup, you should rather have suspected your fault or at least ask the people to help you out before concluding it was the "bad choice" so easily.
i think what is confusing you is the variety of VNC's connecting methods. VNC offers both of client>server and server>client connection, and for each of those, there're a few destination address formats such as "<IPaddress>::<Port#>". but note that it's always providing the easiest way that anybody can understand. don't take it quite confusing but get the server IP address, make sure the VNC server is running and type the address in the client's connection window. even the port number isn't needed in usual case. that's it. doesn't it work?
listen mode is only required to pre-load the viewer to establish reverse (server>client) connection.
* I also read in this forum that you have to open several ports for the program to work.
you need to open only ONE of your server port 5900/tcp for typical use.
*I always used PcAnywhere and it worked great, easy simple and effective.
i hope you'll find it was worth to try this "free" software that is simpler, faster and more functional.

hmm, I now understand that the server is for the PC that you want to control and you connect through the viewer.
Ok, this is an option that I figured out and worked but only through the IP numbers from the router.
When I typ my own IP number and click on the connect button, nothing happens and after a 50 seconds I recieve the message that there is no connection available.
So I can't make it work through the internet connection but only through my router.
Strange, when I used PcAnywhere and opened port 5631 and 5632 it works like hell, now I open port 5900 (and 5800) and VNC doesn't work ?

The Firewall from the speedtouch ADSL modem is OFF and the firewall from the Sweex Broadband Router has the right NAT settings and open ports.
Mayby it's because I'm on the same IP address as I want to connect to through internet but if I ask someone else to try to connect to my IP number there's also no connection made
