UVNC works on my side of the router not from internet

Post by navyguy »

All,
I can only get UVNC to work using my local IPs when connecting via my browser. Does not work at all through the viewer. I have a DDNS host: http://redeyetreefrog.ddns.info/
But as you can see only get the router login, any ideas?

Pls tell us which uVNC version you are using also OS version.
>as you can see only get the router login
I can't even get that. What URL are you using in your browser? With some routers you cant use a WAN IP or URL from inside the LAN - it doesn't do the forwarding. If you are trying from WAN side then what do your router firewall logs say?
In the VNC viewer dialog, what "VNC server" address are you using?

Sorry I was so vague, my wife was on my ass to get off the computer.
I am using Windows XP SP2, UVNC version v1.0.1 Release.
I am using this URL in my browser and I get my router login:
http://redeyetreefrog.ddns.info/
I have set up my router to forward ports 5500, 5800, and 5900 via both UDP and TDP, for local IPs of the two computers I'm using.
In the viewer I have tried 192.169.10.4:5800 and my dynamic ip of 24.136.36.95:5800

As I said before I an gain access to my other machines when I type 192.168.10.4:5800 into my browser, but thats not very helpful.
As for my router logs, they only say when my DHCP leases are renewed and wireless access granted.

NavyGuy,
Can you do your viewer and servers to work in a LAN settting?? If so, make sure that it works on this before attempting a WAN connection. I have came across ISP that filter traffic and some of them make it almost impossible to setup a WAN Connection. That can be extremely frustrating.

I have set up my router to forward ports 5500, 5800, and 5900 via both UDP and TDP, for local IP
only use TCP port, close UDP port.

from vncviewer.exe (don't put http header, only for web browser)
VNC Server field:
redeyetreefrog.ddns.info
24.136.36.95:5900 (from internet)
192.169.10.4:5900 (from internal LAN only at your home)

from web browser url: (put http header because non standard port 5800)
http://redeyetreefrog.ddns.info:5800
http://192.169.10.4:5800 (from internal LAN only at your home)
http://24.136.36.95:5800 (from internet)

your ddns client need to be run on your vnc server side for remote control your own computer from anywhere!

navyguy,
What ISP are you dealing with? The reason I ask this is that I am trying to compile a list of ISP's that are having major issues with Ultra VNC. So that this information will help other uesers. I am currently fighting two locations myself that the Ultra VNC is setup up properly and will still will not work via a WAN ( internet connection)..:D

Hey if it's all working LAN side then that sounds like progress! 8) What browser and computer/OS are you using on the WAN side to try to connect to your VNC server? I've had issues with IE on Macs running OS 9 and OS X.

Me too...

I tried this a long time back with no luck but since downloading the latest version I thought I'd give it another go. Initially I thought the problem was with the firewall at work but since changing to an isp with a dynamic IP (UK Online fwiw) I got a dyndns account.

I have opened TCP ports 5500 5800 and 5900 on the router to the machine running the server. I have also opened those ports in the windows firewall on all machines involved.

Now from another machine on my private subnet I can get the control screen using http://192.168.1.12:5800 Forcing that machine to go out and come back in through the router by using http://<my_id>.dyndns.org:5800 just gives the same grey screen.

I tried this from work today with the same result - I did look at the page source at work and the html embedding the applet is there - in fact I did see a Sun logo at one time.

My bet is I've missed something which will be obvious to an expert but not to me. I can successfully control two other apps on this box remotely on different ports and a while back had an ip webcam running on a third port.

*** Update ***
Decided to play with this a bit more.

When trying to connect through the dyndns url the java console shows ...
Network error: could not connect to server: <my dyndns url>:5900

I turned on logging on the server and can see my internal logins in mslogon.log but no trace of the external one. This doesn't prove much though as I don't see the password box when doing an external connect.

Will play a bit more....

*** Got there ***
This was a problem with my settings on the windows firewall. Ages ago I'd opened port 5900 but set it to own subnet only and I'd completely forgotten that. When I came to open the ports it said I'd already opened 5900 so I just did the other two (what is 5500 - I've only seen it mentioned in one of the help files and that was wrong anyway as it said open udp ports).

Anyhow now with all three opened on all relevant firewalls it is working fine on my dyndns url. Whether or not it will through the firewall at work remains to be seen...

5500 is typically used for "reverse connections" - when the server makes connection to a viewer in "listen" mode. For example when using Single-Click (SC). In fact all the port numbers are configurable and you can use anything you want, as long as you are consistent and don't choose a port used by another service ...

Thanks for the info.

Bad news is that the firewall at work still doesn't let it through. I doubt I'll get round that one.
