I can't see in the preferences where to turn this off? Is there a site where this is explained?

I'm afraid that if it starts and I leave the computer someone (hacker) could get in an make a mess. :cry:

I use Windows XP Professional.

Try running msconfig under Start -> Run. Then go to the last tab and uncheck it from your start up.

You can use 128bit encryption with the MSRC4 plugin and you can also use router to schedule when ports are open to even further increase security.


If installed as a service you can goto your windows services.
cmd "services.msc"

Find the winvnc service and disabled it, or set it to manual. Remove the automatic setting.

It really depends on how you have it installed as a service or as an application..

if you don't want winvnc running all time,

1st point see answer of Guest (msconfig)
2nd point to check:
Start... Run
services.msc
check there no vnc server at all

stop winvnc service
Start... Run
net stop winvnc

uninstall winvnc service
Start... Run
"%programfiles%\UltraVNC\winvnc.exe" -uninstall

and

3rd solution,
if you want to use vnc server time by time, on demand
use SingleClick SC exactly this feature only by on demand !

It's worth having a look at the UVNC menu options that hang of Start -> All Programs. Under UltraVNC Server, Remove WinVNC Service is that one the executes "C:\Program Files\UltraVNC\winvnc.exe" -remove ... the one labelled Install WinVNC turns it back on "permanently" (i.e. after next reboot IIRC). You probably don't need the others. I've never quite understood the ServiceHelper option as it just seems to start the server quietly. Another useful one is the basic shortcut to WinVNC.exe - this shows up as UltraVNC Server (blue icon) in the main UVNC folder hanging off All Programs.

If you want people to be able to connect to and see/control your computer as and when you want then uninstall the service and just start the server as and when, stopping it from the tray Icon (rt. click -> Close VNC) when you have finished. If you want to connect to and see other people's PCs then remove ("uninstall") the service and use SC as redge suggests
