What chance SC for Macintosh?
What chance SC for Macintosh?
Standard UltraVNC works well as server only for Mac but is there any possibility of SC for Mac?
In all seriousness, I support a lot of printing and sign shops and their Macs are rapidly being replaced by XP boxes. The only area I see an increase in Macs is in salesmen buying a companion for their Palm PCs that is somewhat easier to type on and transfer their email. It's a shame to see such a fine piece of equipment reduced to little more than a storage device.
Mac client and server
On my Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger computer, I use the free OSXvnc 1.6.1 as a server and the free Chicken of the VNC 2.1b3 as a client. I can connect to UltraVNC just fine, but I can't use the bells and whistles like file transfer and chat.
File transfer is no problem, really, since Mac OS X can use SAMBA to connect directly to any shared folders on a Windows XP PC on the same subnet.
Go to http://versiontracker.com and select Mac OS X applications. Then search on "VNC" and you will find info on these products.
I live by these programs. I have a Mac on the third floor of our townhome and my wife has a Windows XP box on the ground floor. I can do just about anything on either box, from either box, making the perfect cross-platform computing environment.

Let us not forget that next year the Mac OS X platform is moving to Intel CPUs.
Maybe UltraVNC can add support for Mac OS X on Intel and forego backward-compatibility with Mac OS X on IBM PowerPC G4 and G5.

Macs are not "rapidly being replaced by Windows XP boxes" across the board. Sales of Macintosh computers have been steadily increasing for the last two years. The number of Mac users in the world is growing measureably. It's not just about percentage of market share. It's about the total number of users. And the "iPod halo effect" appears to be very real.

Yes i think one day we all will be working on one platform.Macs are not "rapidly being replaced by Windows XP boxes" across the board.
After trying out the Beta Vista i kept feeling i was on MAC.
Perhaps in the years to come MS will not see the need to maintain two OS and with MAC moving to the INTEL platform emulation(pearpc) and finily intergration might happen. Then the last two OS might battle it out, Linux vs MS, in the power struggle more emulation as we have see with ReactOS and finaly full integration of these two. We seen Novel and Suse Linux do this, so wont be surrprised. I think in another 10 years all us tech guys will be on one OS.
Untill then its going to be a bumpy ride for us techs, the market will change in big ways... Better get a second skill i thinks, I always wanted to be a pilot for a 747. Traveling the world.

Chicken of the VNC w/ Mac...
Many thanks to WWiii for the info about Chicken Of The VNC. I've been setting up our home computer (Apple iMac G3) to interface w/ her work machine (PC, of course) and have a question. Usually COTVNC works fine, but occasionally we get a message saying that the authorization (not the right term, but memory is failing me right now...) has failed. This usually happens after work hours, which, of course, is when she most needs it to work! The system is never off-line, as far as we know. She works at a radio station, so there are people working in the building 24/7.
Also, we just did an experiment to see if I could log onto her work machine
after she's logged off. The log-on screen appeared asking for "control-alt-delete" to begin the log on sequence. I could not find any combination of control-you name it-delete that would start the log-on. Which Mac key corresponds to "alt"? Are "control" and "delete" on the Mac keyboard the same for PC?
Thanks!
