Slow File Transfer

Post by victor_knight »

Why is the file transfer function in UltraVNC so achingly slow? Especially for larger files.

UtraVNC Compresses files before it sends them so you will notice delays depending on file size..:D

Is there any way to disable compression of the files? Not only that, I've noticed that once the transfer begins even, it's very slow. A 300 MB file can take up to 30 minutes over a LAN!

Victor,
I would say no that you can't but a developer could say for sure;)

Yes compressioning the file ------->sending ----------->decompressing on the other side take alot of time on bigger files.

What I have done is pushed the files to an FTP then use vnc on the remote pc 's browser to pull them back down. That speeded things up for me:)

Of course this is not turning off compression which is what you orginally asked but maybe a good workaround for you.:)

yeah set up an ftpd they have small footprint they're fast and you can even browse with just windows explorer. if you're looking for one filezilla server is freeware and has just a 1.1mb memory footprint.

I used this FTP solution with other versions of VNC like, 'TightVNC' because they didn't have a built-in file transfer function like UltraVNC. Perhaps the problem will be resolved in a updated version.

Also, I've noticed the desktop colors in UltraVNC to be inconsistent too. The colors seem to shade in and out from time to time. Does that have anything to do with my settings?

the colors fade because you set the bandwith autodetection. with autodetection the compression algorithm changed according to the connection speed (the connection slows down during file transfers so the algorithm is changed)
