How to install via remote desktop?

Post by busie23 »

I thought I have installed this before while connected through remote desktop, but now it isn't working. Maybe I'm thinking of something else? Anyway, is there a documented work around to do this?

My problem seems to be that the service isn't starting up, nor is the box that pops up asking to set up the default password working when I install it via remote desktop.

Do you have to pyhsically be in front of the machine to install VNC?

You are probably not getting prompted for a password because one probably already exists in the attempts to install VNC.

You do no have to be physically at a machine to install VNC. There are other options such as FastPush for remotely installing this program.

The question is, is Remote Desktop your only option for remote installation? ie, is this over the Internet without a VPN connection or can you "map a drive" to this computer as an admin? What OS is the remote machine?

All servers that I want VNC on are win2000. Most servers are at one of ar closer locations so getting a body there to install VNC can be done, but several of the servers are at locations that are several hundred miles away. They are all on the same network, and I do have VPN access to our network.

The main problem that we were having is rebooting servers with remote desktop. Several have programs that need started up manually after rebooting. Are only option is to leave a remote desktop session logged in with the started program running.

With VNC we can log in, start program, log out and not worry about random sessions being opened.

Thanks.

Since you have VPN access then you could use FastPush, but you also should consider http://www.vncscan.com .

Where I work we're not 'allowed' to use VNC full time. :( I use a script based on this one that temporarily installs VNC then uninstalls when done. http://www.realvnc.com/pipermail/vnc-li ... 12932.html

Now, all that being said... Is there anyway to have these programs startup automatically? Could they be started via Task Scheduler and have the task set to run at Startup?

While messing around with trying to get VNC installed I decided to try the task scheduler for fun. We were under the impression that it would't function properly in there either, but I said what the heck and tried anyway. It worked! I'm now wondering how or why we were thinking that that didn't work either?

Anyway, thanks for the help on that. I probably never would have thought to try that again unless you mentioned it.

Now on to see why the new version of UltraVNC is so much slower than the previous version (v1.0.0 - RC 18) we had on there. If I can get that worked out on the server that is close on location here I can get back to trying to get it installed remotely.

Thanks again!

LOL. I'm glad it is working for you using an appropriately sized hammer. :D

My problem is slightly different. I have 25 win98 machines that have ATT VNC on them that is set to start automatically[minimized]with a shortcut in the startup folder. I also have 6 XP machines that have ESVNC on them that is installed as a service. What I would like to do is uninstall all of these versions WITHOUT losing my setting for password and port number. Then install ultravnc 1.0 and have it take up thos settings.

On the win98 machines I can just deleted the shortcut in the startup folder thru the logon(kixtart) script. But the files are would be still there. I could also delete the files thru the logonscript but would the registry entries still point to the old locations?

On the XP machines I have no idea where to start to do this. ANY help would be appreciated.

I'm not familiar with Evnc, but if the file names are the same it seems one could simply stop the VNC service copy the new files to the same place and then restart the service.

I have to run now, but could you post the location for Evnc and the WinVNC.exe's name, if it is different?

Thanks,
Claymon

I did some reasearch which brought me back to UVNC.

It looks like UVNC and ESVNC are very similar. I'd try the techniques above on a test machine. If it works then it could be script fairly easily.

Anyway until you will make a fix for this I think I found a way to set it up using remote desktop:
1. Start UltraVNC server and setup the password and other settings for UltraVNC application.
2. Setup the password and other settings for Show Default Settings from UltraVNC server menu (from start menu)
3. With regedit copy the Password key from HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/ORL/Winvnc3 to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/ORL/WinVNC3. (actually you need to create a new binary key at destination and copy only the value)

Only doing this the UltraVNC will start automatically when you restart the computer.
I think the bug is that when you set the password HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE is not updated cause there is not password key there but only in HKEY_LOCAL_USER.
Maybe you can fix this for the future and include these advices in the manual until then.

Gabriel
