SC setting up the helpdesk.txt

Post by Kim »

I have a question. How do I set up a a standalone version when I don't know what the IP will be? I have a couple hundred users on DHCP, so I need to know how to make it listen on whatever the user's remote IP address is. Is there a comprehensive document on this anywhere?

This is just a guess, not so much an informed answer, but shouldn't you be able to resolve to the machine name regardless of the use of dynamic IPs?

With SC you don't need to know the client's IP addresses, just the addresses, or DNS names, of the machines that will be doing the admin work. This is why the file is called HelpDesk.txt. You just need the names/IPs of the HelpDesk machines.

SC is absolutely brilliant. It does a reverse connection into the viewer. No passwords to bother with and it handles most firewalls well.

There needs to be IP addresses or hostnames in the HOSTS sections.

Server? You actually need to be running the Viewer on your computer. Use the "/listen" switch, or for encryption this is what I use:

vncviewer.exe /dsmplugin MSRC4Plugin_NoReg.dsm /listen

This a backwards concept, actually reverse :) , the Server (SC) is connecting to the client (VNCviewer), but then the server gives control to the client.

If you are testing this on the computer "next to you" you still need an IP address, but it would be an internal one

some networks are set up to use the ips
192.168.0.2
192.168.0.3
192.168.0.4

others use "192.168.1.xx" numbers

Rudy -- your note about double clicking on internet support confuses me.
"internet support" is just user defined text.

Can you answer 3 questions:

a) can I click anywhere in the box where internet support appears?

b) doesn't single click work? why does single click give me "no server selected" error?

d) why the F$%#! doesn't this software use a button?
it is a bad ui not to use a button because without
on, you don't get visual feedback when you depress
mouse button

a) NO
The box is a standard LIST BOX, each [HOST] entry generates a line
in the box.
You need to click the line corresponding to [HOST] entry.

If you have multiple hosts, you can see the line get selected.

b) Single click select line
Double click execute line
This is STANDARD
Check your windows explorer:
Single click=select file
Double click=execute file

d)Have you ever see an explorer that generate buttons for each file ?
If you only would have 1 HOST, then a simple connect button would do the trick, but the interface allow multiple hosts....

Workaround
If you have only 1 [HOST] entry, add [DIRECT].
Then the user don't need to select/execute an entry,
program continue after 2 seconds.
