Will remote server work if port is unknown?

Post by Sleepy »

I want to connect my wifes PC from home to work with VNC server on her work computer.
Client on her HOME computer.

She wants to be able to get on from her personal desktop box here at home. I want it to be client. So she can run the service on work machine and access when she wants it from home.

Installed VNC on the company computer at her work location tonight.

Got the external WAN IP addy 64.232.xx (Static address) and registered it with noip. Created new account. So I have the redirect.
Is there a way to know what port to configure at her workplace thoughk. Since I have no control over port forwarding etc in her company network I don't know if it's possible or not.

Would you please let me know yes or no on this one? I've been reading posts for a long time but not seen anything on this issue. I'm sure it's there..still have 37 pages to read!

Thanks

UltraVNC FAQ
[topic=3567][/topic]

bypass the unknown settings of router/nat of the office wife !
[topic=3923][/topic]

at home the viewer, you need the vncviewer listening port 5500
you need to configure your DynamicDNS on the HOME NAT/router and redirect the port 5500 to your home computer viewer

on office wife (reverse mode)
you need to use a script like visualcron for server winvnc connect to your wife computer to dynamicDNS properly configured at home

I have already done all the port forward on 5500 at home. SC works great. Problem is with the firewall at her workplace and not knowing a port. Then even if we have a port the work firewall will probably block it.

connecting from server to the listening viewer at home works like a charm
She can connect this way too but does no good as we need to connect the other direction.

She can call home and see home PC on work computer, but we need the other way around.

With SC she has to have someone here to accept the connection or will it wait indefinate? So she can click to call home and accept when she gets to it?

Note the home PC is only being used for this vnc connection so no other interruptions are going to be a problem.

Thanks for the help!

If you want to connect to your work box from home A)Talk to the network administrator first if you are going to do this if there is one. B)If there is one get their blessings to try because otherwise your wife may get in trouble for doing something she isnt allowed to do.

Otherwise - Have work computer initiate outgoing connection to home PC via SC, or UVNC. Have home computer listening for either connections from SC or UVNC and you will then have a connection to her work computer from home.

Lastly - once you get it working look into getting encryption working over the link as it is not exactly plain text but a known cypher for the default VNC stream.

SCIII would bypass many firewall
(but not strong firewall checking every header of packet)

If I have SC establish a connection to viewer (which is all that works right now) how long will vnc wait for confimation?

IE: If she launches and gets home from work an hour later, will it still be waiting?

sounds like I need to write a batch file for her to run, but have to study the command line options.....links would be very helpful :)

self killed after 5min if there no existant connection made
it the reason you need a batch, script that schedule every x minute to start a connection

Intermediary proxy servers can be a drag. I bypass the whole thing with SSH via port 22 and initiate the reverse connection from work via scripts. This program might help.

go to VNC-Related products and read [topic=4454][/topic]

sc command from the resourcekit to get this done. There's also a description in the MS knowledgebase how to do that with regedit.
in this context:
SC.exe = Service Controller

not speaking about SC aka SingleClick
