IP "127.0.0.1" using BB USB Modem...

A family member started asking me some advice re: her PC, so I thought I'd talk her through setting up UltraVNC server so i could help more...

I have set up and used UltraVNC myself between my own PC's which are connected using a router, and I'm a little familiar with port fowarding from external IP's to my local IP's (192.168.0.1 etc).

However, my cousin is using broadband and connects using a USB modem. It is the only PC connected. I thought I'd be ok trying to connect using the IP she gets if she uses "www.whatismyip.com", but it doesn't seem to work - and when I looked into this, my cousin reckons she is shown "127.0.0.1" if she hovers over the VNC icon.

I'm unfamiliar with this kind of IP. She is under the impression that there are no settings she can change for the modem.

What's the deal? Is there a way around this?

If it helps, the modem she is using is a BT Voyager 105 USB Modem.

Is your cousin using Windows XP? There is a firewall option in Windows XP that needs to be reconfigured to allow VNC connections.

no - it's not windows XP. (I think it's 2000)

It's the IP that I'm more concerned about. I intended to enter her IP into my VNC viewer in order to connect...

Click on Start -> Run and type CMD and press enter. At the command prompt, type ipconfig /all. This should list all IP addresses of the workstation. I think you should see something for PPP adapter.

Failing that, ask your cousin to conntect to you by running the VNC Server, right click the VNC icon and select Add New Client.

Umm... whilst looking at server settings I spotted "Add New Client".

I don't really follow what this is doing though. On server, it brings up a message "Viewer: "

What does she put in there?

And what do i then do with viewer at my end?

You need to run UltraVNC in listen mode. Your cousin when enters your IP address.

using ipconfig, the following is shown:

ethernet adapter
ip address:169.254.2.###
subnet mask:255.255.0.0
default gateway:(nothing)

1 ethernet adapter
ip address:0.0.0.0
subnet mask:0.0.0.0
default gateway:(nothing)

2 ethernet adapter
ip address:172.190.133.###
Subnet mask:255.255.0.0
Default gateway:172.190.133.###

www.whatismyip.com gives "172.190.133.###" as shown for "2 ethernet adapter".

Hovering over the VNC icon gives: "127.0.0.1"

IP 169.254.2.### is assigned by Windows internal DHCP server.

IP 172.190.133.### is the dial up IP address. There may be something stoping the connect, e.g. a firewall.

using this 'add new client' etc...

I've opened vnc viewer in listen mode.

my cousin then "adds new client" and inserts my IP address.

she says nothing then happens at her end, and nothing happens at my end.

What should we expect to happen?

i have port 5900 forwarded to my PC. Does this "Listen mode" use that port too? Or do i have to add another port?

Listen mode is port 5500.

But what should actually happen?

I open VNC viewer in listen mode,
She adds new client, adding my IP,

and then what? Does a viewing window just open on mine? or do i get notified of anything? Do I have to do anything else at my end?

When your cousin enters your IP address in Host Name and clicks OK, you should see her desktop. I use this option for all of my customers who need help from me.
