first of all i have got ultraVNC setup on my home network, which has 3 computers. i have got it working from one pc to another over the network using 192.168.0.xx or whatever
but now i want to get it working so i can access one of the pc's when i am away over the internet. i am going to university soon so i want to access it from there. our network uses NTL cable and has smoothwall router. i have setup a dns name to redirect to the dynamic ip and have downoaded the dynamic ip update tool. i have also forwarded the required ports.
however, im just terribly confused, this tool does not seem to be very well documented unless you know what your talking about, which i really dont. and to confuse it more theres so many versions like ultravnc, SC, SCIII and within ultraVNC you can either connect to the server or you can have the viewer listen for incoming connections.
basically, i dont know which program to use. i have ultravnc setup at the moment, with server running on one machine and viewer on the other. kevinb456.no-ip.org is mapped to the dynamic ip. do i just type kevinb456.no-ip.org in the connect box? or is it kevinb456.no-ip.org:5500 or ::5500, do i have to include the http:// or not? there are so many little things like this that are un-documented or if they are, i cant for the life of me find where.
basically, what do i type in the connect box if i want to access my pc from the internet? im presuming theres something ive missed, as i generally dont have much knowledge on networks, ip's etc. more than most people, but obviously too little all the same!
any help is apreciated, sorry for the rambling post, hope this is in the right section!

Im so confused... please help!
for remote control,
if you use standard port from vnc viewer at your university for direct connection to your home vnc server
[topic=4003][/topic]
just type kevinb456.no-ip.org
is like you type:
kevinb456.no-ip.org:5900
you wrote:
kevinb456.no-ip.org::5500
this port 5500 only for reverse connection, mean your server connect to your viewer
about : and ::
explanation applicable for any vnc flavor:
:display (0 - 99 == accept only 5800 to 5899(for http) and 5900 to 5999(RFB protocol)
example: port 5901 == display N° 1
::port (any port outside of standard port need double colons)
examples:
::443 (vnc viewer connecting to vnc server as non standard port)
::5555 (vnc server connecting to vnc viewer as non standard port)
vncviewer -listen port
vncviewer -listen display <<-- not available !

thanks, that was clearer.
however i have aready tried that and it doesnt work, so thats probably where my original confusion ies, i wasnt sure whether kevinb456.no-ip.org was correct, because it didnt work (just like all the other cominations i tried).
i have assigned a static ip address of 192.168.0.222 to the vnc server pc. the ports have been set in the router to forward to this.
if i connect to 192.168.0.222 or 192.168.0.222:5800 through a webbrowser then it works fine.
because i am not at usinversity yet all i can test is from the same pc on my home network. when i try kevinb456.no-ip.org it doesnt work.
is it possible there are some other settings blocking the connection, or have i got the dns directed to the wrong ip? i have got kevinb456.no-ip.org redirected to 81.96.87.26 (which is the same ip i get reported if i go to www.whatismyip.com). it could be the windows firewall, but this did not block it when i used 192.168.0.222 so i thought it probably wasnt the answer. any ideas?
thanks very much for your help and the quick answer.
one other question - we have several user accounts on the vnc server pc. because i installed the server on my user account, i can only connect remotely when i am logged into my account on the remote pc. is there anyway to gain remote access nomatter who is logged on?

You can improve a little bit DNS lookup performance from yours computers by manual adding DNS from your ISP to your TCP/IP network card
complete yours primary and secondary DNS to every computer/network card config on your home LAN even their are client DHCP.

so, you have the problem from second link and need to be fixed withe the first link
In other words, There 1 winvnc.exe with 2 level of usage (service or/and application)
you saved only one password as user application and (maybe y) you don't know or forget to sync your password for winvnc started as service.
winvnc as SYSTEM mode Default_Local_System_Properties
WinVNC: Default Local System Properties
winvnc as USER mode Current_User_Properties
WinVNC: Current User Properties

You people should try, the new/latest UltraVNC does not give me a second entry level dialog anymore.
I entered the default passwd for service-start, because I want access on an XP machine when nobody is logged in, I did that as administrator.
Yet it doesn't start. It errors with the
"No password has been set & this machine has been preconfigured to prevent users from setting their own"
And yes, I did a clean install on a clean installed fresh XP Pro.
