Using an outside repeater

Post by Chris H »

I don't think repeater would be the correct term to use, maybe more like a gateway.

If I have two computers that are behind a router, could I link them together using a "repeater" that is outside of both networks?

For instance, I have a server running at say vncserver.no-ip.org which both PCs are able to connect from their networks. Is there anyway for the server to facilitate a direct link between the two PCs? I'd prefer the server sort of handed off the connection so that it is out of the loop if anything like this is possible.

Chris:

Heya. That's what echoWare does, which is the software behind EchoVNC.

With echoWare, any two applications can interact with each other via a 3rd party "relay server" called an "echoServer". EchoVNC isn't much more than a GUI wrapped around echoWare in order to facilitate making VNC connections.

cheers,
Scott

Cool. Are there any freeware version of it available? It kills the connection after 10 minutes which makes it fall short of what I need. :(

But it does exactly what I'm looking for.

Chris:

Heya. Glad it works for you! We run a free server at "demo.echovnc.com" if you want to simply relay on that one. Otherwise, the echoServer itself is a $25 shareware app (Windows or Linux) to remove the 10-minute connection limit.

cheers,
Scott
