DSM plugin with UltraVNC not installed in "Program Files"
DSM plugin with UltraVNC not installed in "Program File
On my main system (17 GB dedicated to around 400 programs) I have an extensive structure for installing programs: a program files folder of 400 subfolders is unmaintainable. So I installed UltraVNC in "C:\Tools\CommsTools\UltraVNC".
I wanted to use the DSM plugin: but it almost *requires* UltraVNC to be in "C:\Program Files\UltraVNC".
Generating a key was difficult: error in the REG-version, but OK in non-REG version; I placed the key -- after finding it -- in the UltraVNC folder.
For the REG-version, I can manually update the registry. For the non-REG version I cannot find a solution to ensure that the key is found in case that the UltraVNC server is installed as a startup system service (when as application I can use the "Start in:"trick, when as service even setting msrc4pluginkey to the complete path of the key in the user environment variables doesn't work.)

First, on the REG version if you go into the "Config" dialog you can set it to any directory you want. You don't need to edit the registry directly.
Second, if you look at the website documentation, one of the first places the NoReg version looks is in the "current directory" which in the case of a service is the "system32" directory. You could drop it in there.
Did you set the msrc4pluginkey variable in the System environment or the user environment?
Did you try any of these suggestions after you emailed me?

you pointed out the littlle confusion of "current directory"Second, if you look at the website documentation, one of the first places the NoReg version looks is in the "current directory" which in the case of a service is the "system32" directory.
mean the place of the current place of file and not the place of "service" folder btw currently "system32" folder !

Redge,
I agree. The whole "current directory" this is a mess. For the viewer you at least have some control over "current directory." For the server, if you run it as an application, you can also have some control. The service on the other hand you have no control over. The only reason I know that its the system32 directory is because that's where the logfile ends up!

ad First) I tried to change the directories in the REG version but that did not work.scovel wrote:First, on the REG version if you go into the "Config" dialog you can set it to any directory you want. You don't need to edit the registry directly.

ad Second) For that reason I tried the non-REG version; for running the server as an application, I used to set "Start to:"; but I didn't know that "system32" was the current-directorey for services;
ad 3) I set it in the "user variables" part of the "Enviropnment variables" and that did not work out.
I did not try any other variation because I also had problems with Authentication in UltraVNC itself --- I have a workgroup LAN and can use VNC Paasword with or without Require MS Logon; my problems become evident when accessing another user (?) or a non-admin (?)user.
with the RC6 I could use the NOREG version with:redge wrote:try release candidate MSRC4119rc6

- either server and the user environment variable set to UltraVNC install folder or server with key in system32
- and with viewer and "Start to" set to UltraVNC install folder.
But....
I very much prefer a solution for both server and viewer with the key in the UtraVNC install folder!!!
Thanks
Peter,
If you set the msrc4pluginkey environment variable in the SYSTEM section, the service will be able to read it. Since the service is not logged-in as a user, it needs to use the SYSTEM section not the USER section.
The NoReg version tries to be "zero-install" so it can work on kiosk machines and work for users with limited permissions. This makes the "current directory" or the environement variable a good solution.
The "current directory" is not quite as nice for the server though. The environment variable is still a viable option as long as you set it in the SYSTEM section.
I do check the USER variables first, then check the SYSTEM variables next. I then go on to check the various other directories. If you set it in the SYSTEM section it should work for both the viewer and the server.
Let me know if it doesn't work for you.
