I've been having trouble connecting an XP and a 2000 machine.
I've gotten it working with my own account logged onto the XP machine, and a network admin account logged onto the 2000 box. HOWEVER, although it doesn't seem to matter what account is logged into the XP box, when certain accounts (such as my own account) are logged into the 2000 box, i get the following error:
-When I try to view my XP machine from the 2000 machine, I get a "DSMPlugin Cannot Be Configured" error, and the MS Login prompt never even comes up.
-When I try to view the 2000 machine from the XP machine, I get
"Connection failed - Invalid protocol!
Possible causes:
- You've forgotten to select a DSMPlugin and the Server uses a DSMPlugin
- The selected DSMPlugin is not compatible with the one running on the Server
- The selected DSMPlugin is not correctly configured (also possibly on the Server)
- The password you've possibly entered is incorrect"
***
I believe its some sort of permissions issue, although even when I log in as a local administrator on the 2000 box, I get that error. When other techs in my department log in, the connection works, possibly because they have different network rights???
***
I can establish a connection when the 2000 box is LOGGED OUT, and the connection will stay intact regardless of who logs on after that.
***
Furthermore, I attempted to connect the XP machine to a 98 machine, and I got those identical errors REGARDLESS of who logs onto the machine. I could not establish a connection at all with the 98 box.
PLEASE HELP if you have any idea what might 'cause these errors.
Thanks,
Seth

"DSMPlugin Cannot Be Configured"
Maybe same DSMPlugin problem...
Hi,
I'm running RC18 on XP and I have the same kind of problem with DSMPlugin. As I don't want to be always logged as a root, I also use a Limited User account and I have "Denied Access Error" each time I log on. DSMPlugin is unable to access info on the key. Is there a way to solve this problem?

encrpt plugin errors
Your getting this because the user that's logged in doesn't have rights to the Hkey local machine keys needed by ultravnc. Poke around with the sysinternals regmon program (as an admin) to find out all the keys that get set by the plugin and you'll see where it writes. Then use something like setacl.exe (sourceforge) to add the users permissions needed to the key
