Hang on install/uninstall video hook driver

Post by booyau »

Hi,

I am having some serious problems with the video hook driver. I installed UltraVNC on a WinXP machine. When it got to the part about installing the video hook driver, the install stopped (it said 100%, but clearly it had a bit more to do with the video driver install) and nothing else happened.

After some time, I finally killed the program. Then, I tried to manually install the video hook driver using the included script several times. UltraVNC still couldn't find it loaded when I used the test video driver button, and I discovered in Task Manager that I had about 5 setupdrv processes hung.

At this point, I rebooted, just in case. Windows would not shut down and I hatd to reset manually. On boot up, Windows discovered new hardware - the video hook driver. I clicked ok to let it install automatically, clicked through a "Not a MSFT signed driver" window, and then again it hung, while copying vnchelp.dll or something.

I've now tried doing setupdrv.exe uninstall multiple times, all of which seem to hang or complete without a message. However, the device manager for video adapters now shows 3 "Unknown devices" with no drivers installed and two "WinVNC video hook drivers" that claim to be installed and working. However, the "test video driver" button still doesn't detect them. Moreover, trying to uninstall or reinstall ANY of these devices from device manager hangs the device manager. Windows shutdown still hangs as well.

Is there some way to remove these devices manually from some ini file or regedit?

Any help is much appreciated. Sorry for the long post, I figured the more detail the better.

Thanks,
Jason

Are you only allowing MS signed drivers ?
Are you running some software that block installing kernel services..

XP --> uninstall can be done via the device manager

You can also manual install it via the device manager
Add new hardware and direct it to the driver directory

What is in the installer log ?

I clicked "Continue anyway" when it asked about MS signed drivers.
I also disabled McAfee before trying to install.

Attempting to uninstall via device manager hangs the device manager. I have left it for long periods of time with no response. The only solution is to kill the device manager. Is there any way to do a manual install via editing of windows configuration files somewhere?

I have tried to do a manual install via device manager by doing "Reinstall driver" but like I said, it freezes as well.

Where do I find the installer log?

The driver installer use the command line version of the device manager.
Registry install is not possible.

The driver for the RC versions (identical driver) was more then
200.000 times downloaded and the Rel1.00 about 20.000 (in 2 days)
without having such reports.

I realy suspect something strange with your system.

+Are you able to install or update any driver without the device manager hangs.

Registry ?
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion
RunOnce
Does the key exist....without this key driver installation is blocked.
Save mode ?
Can you uninstall the device in save mode ?

I've got about the same problem : my PC doesn't hang but the Hook Driver don't work. (sorry for my poor englis I'm french)

If I look in Properties --> check the hook driver everythinh is ok but "the driver IS NOT Active"

Ok let's see how to resolve that : i found it came from an old version : we used RC14 before.

1- Uninstall driver.
2- Uninstall UltraVNC
3- Delete UltraVNC folder
4- Reboot
5- Go to Windows or Winnt folder and search VNC*

If you see files like VNCDRV, VNCCOM or VNCDRV delete them !!

Ok now install the last release, DON'T CONNECT, reboot

Now I've got "the driver IS Active" !

The problem is that in the very old version before RC18
we use dll version like 1.0.9, now we use 1.0.19

For some stupid reason, MS find 1.0.9>1.0.19....
9=90 :(

This cause unexpected behaviour during upgrade from versions before RC18

YES, it works! great job guys and now I'm happy :)

Also found why the video hook driver was hanging at install...
the box is an XP-box without screen/keyboard, reason why I was installing over a remote desktop connection... No problem when I did connect screen and keyboard and did it in the normal way.

Thanks again. Ultr@VNC is super. I'll tell everybody to forget the MS remote stuff and use Ultr@VNC.

I was also attempting to uninstall over remote desktop, although I don't understand why taht would make a difference. I will give it a try on the actual computer, and also in safe mode, and let you guys know how it goes.

Rudi De Vos --> thanks for this information.

MS count like that ... I think :

1.0.1
1.0.2
.......
1.0.9
1.1.0
1.1.1
.......
1.1.9
1.2.0

etc.

Wich files I have to delete and where to be sure to upgrade my PCs with an easy scipt addon ?

Setupdrv -install (-sinstall) auto upgrade/install the videodriver (silent)
But this can only be done for RC18 and later.

Winvnc has a protection agaist wrong driver version and disable the option to prevent a BSOD in case wrong version if found.

For version before RC18 you best uninstall the driver
setupdrv -uninstall before upgrade.

REBOOT after uninstall. The uninstall is only sheduled, but the actual uninstall happen on reboot....MS way.

Got the same problem (posted it under Bug reports before I registered, sorry
here it is - [topic=3375][/topic])

I had TightVNC installed before I moved to UltraVNC, I uninstalled everything, and then installed uvnc, and I install through WinXP Remote because the computer is attached only to a TV that is on the other side of the room.

I didn't get what the solution is though...

Should I install uvnc with a monitor attached localy? or should I manualy delete the files uvnc created in system32 and in uvnc install folder and reinstall from the beginning?

Yes of course :/

I think the protection mecanism wich prevent old driver to run fail.
I'll look today to the register
