Best plugin to use for general purposes

Post by vsinc »

Hello!

I went through the whole forum and it seems that after all the MSRC4 DSM Plugin is still the best option?

It also seems to be the fastest, right? Why then all the other plugin?

Please give my an advice on what is the best general use plugin that gives enough protection and also is not slowing down the remote machine during file transfers. I am using UltraVNC to connect and retrieve a copy of a relatively large file (15MB and growing) and the remote side must be able to continue normal operation during the transfer (this are POS stations). Remote machines are Win2000, Old Celeron 1.2GHz. Viewer is on XP P4 3.0GHz.

Thanks in advance,
VSiNC

Also it seems like most people use the no_reg version. If I am to switch to the no_reg version is there something to be aware of (should I uninstall first, etc.)? And in general, If I do upgrades from previous versions can I just overwrite previous installs (and is this going to save the settings) or it is best to uninstall completely first?

Thanks again.

#1. MSRC4 is the only PRODUCTION quality plugin at the moment.

#2. Last time I benchmarked in my little unscientific way, MSRC4 was the fastest.

#3. MSRC4 is proprietary, non-portable, and has some issues with key sizes and features depending on the version of Windows. OpenSSL is GPL and cross-platform.

#4. Encryption does slow down the machine, a little. I didn't benchmark CPU utilization. RC4 is relatively light-weight.

#5. NoReg requires zero installation. The Reg version does put some information in the registry. No install/uninstall required between versions.

#6. The Reg version will write the registry entries if they are missing, otherwise it just reads them. It does not over-write them.

Hope that helps!
