Hi there,
in the last couple of weeks I have tried everything when trying to get access to my PC which is behind my Netgear Router.
I have now decided that it's the setup of my router as I CAN access it from another PC on my network using this PC's IP in the gateway.
I have tested with numerous tests & software; ports 5800 & 5900 are OPEN.
The only other thing I may have wrong, is the names of the services when setting up my router.
At the moment it is as follows:
Service Name: uvnc Port: 5900
Service Name: uvnc_http Port: 5800
Both are Type: TCP
I hope I can make some ground here.
Regards,
Deon

Service Name: Router Setup
If your router is using nat then you could probably set up port forwarding to allow the connection. You tell the router that when a connection comes in on port 5900 then direct the traffic to whichever machine is running the VNC server. If you are using a host based firewall (even SP2 for WinXP) then you may have to allow the port there also.
Unfortunately, it won't be as easy as changing a single setting. You will need to find the place in your router that will forward ports. Forward the needed port to the IP address of the machine you run UVNC on. A slightly more lazy, but not recommended method would be to enable DMZ, and set the IP address to the same machine running UVNC. Enabling DMZ will forward all unused ports to the computer, making it a security risk. If you do that, make sure you're running a firewall on the UVNC machine.
Re: Service Name: Router Setup
Since you have the ports forwarding to the PC you want to have using the VNC software I am wondering what the issue is. I am assuming from the computer you wish to run VNC from - you did a web based port scan and that is how you determined its open.. not internal on your network right?Deon wrote:Hi there,

You say it could be the service name - thats just a description in the Netgear router no big deal you could call it anything it allows and as long as the port is forwarded properly then it should be right.
What is the error message - failed to connect to server?
Are you using any type of DSM security? IP filitering?
I am not sure if you are saying you can not connect to your Internet IP address from inside your network or from outside your network.. If you have two PC's on your internal network and you try to use your Outside IP address (e.g. 12.X.X.X:5800 or 5900) from PC A to connect to PC B on your inside network some routers dont route back inside your network.. so.. that could be your issue. Have you tried from an alternate connection to the internet?
Just wondering.
Hi there,
thanx for your reply.
1. Yes, I did the scan from a web based app; Shields UP! from www.grc.com
2. I have ports 5800 & 5900 OPEN.
3. Yes, I can connect to this PC from inside my network when I use this IP: 192.168.0.6 - which is the exact IP I have forwarded my ports 5800 & 5900 to.
4. When I try to connect from the other PC to this one via my ADSL's public IP, I get a message: "Failed to connect to server".
Here is the log of my router to confirm my ports 5800 & 5900 are open.
Fri, 2005-06-17 21:10:04 - TCP Packet - Source:204.1.226.228,56943 Destination:192.168.0.6,5800 - [uvnc_http match]

I don't even get to the part where the pop-up asks for my password.
I still have not tried to connect from my PC at office, which is a stand alone ADSL connection (It's my own business and only I use the Net.)
Can I ask you to try to get the password screen when giving you my IP or is it dangerous?
I will really appreciate your advice and patience to solve this. I know it's solvable.

Deon:
Heya. You should try what you haven't tried yet: connecting to your VNC server from your ADSL connection at work. It will probably work.
Here's what I think is happening: you're trying to connect to your port-forwarded VNC Server from behind the router that's doing the port-forwarding. That's sorta like trying to make a bed while you're still in it. Most "consumer grade" routers (Netgear, D-Link, Linksys, etc.) just aren't that smart, to be able to make such "port-looping" connections.
The best you can do to test port-forwarding are scans such as the one at GoToMyVNC.com. In fact, that's why I wrote that one.
hope that helps,
Scott

Scott,
thanx for the reply.
I ran the scan and this is what I got:
Checking you out at IP address "165.146.0.165, 196.25.253.13"...

What does it mean?
I think it means that the ports don't forward?
